What are Structural Apprentices?

Structural Apprentices are entry-level trainees who work under experienced structural workers, such as ironworkers or steel fabricators, to learn the skills needed for constructing and maintaining buildings, bridges, and other structures. Their training includes reading blueprints, assembling frameworks, installing metal components, and learning safety procedures. Structural Apprenticeships combine on-the-job training with classroom instruction, preparing individuals for a career in the structural trades. This role is essential for gaining practical experience and working toward becoming a certified structural worker or journeyman.

As a Structural Apprentice, you will typically assist in constructing, assembling, and repairing structural frameworks and building components under the supervision of experienced tradespeople. Your daily tasks may include measuring materials, cutting and shaping steel or wood, installing beams, and following blueprints or technical drawings. Apprentices often rotate through different job sites, gaining exposure to residential, commercial, or industrial projects, which helps broaden their skillset. Collaboration with other trades, like electricians and plumbers, is common, and you'll learn to work efficiently within a team to meet project deadlines.

We offer comprehensive, year-round construction and maintenance services, including asphalt, concrete, landscaping, power washing, and winter operations. Our mission is to build lasting partnerships and exceed expectations through quality work, safety, and integrity. We take pride in doing things the right way, supporting our team, and delivering work we can stand behind. Built on teamwork, accountability, and respect, weโ€™re looking for people who want steady, hands-on work and the opportunity to grow with a company that invests in its people and serves its communities year-round.

Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced and leadership-driven Concrete Foreman to oversee concrete crews on residential, commercial, and infrastructure projects. The Concrete Foreman will manage all aspects of concrete work, from planning and preparation to execution and quality control, ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest standards. This role requires strong technical knowledge of concrete processes, excellent supervisory skills, and a commitment to safety and efficiency. The ideal candidate will lead by example, coordinate with Operations, and ensure team performance aligns with project goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Crew Supervision: Lead and direct a crew of concrete apprentices and finishers, assigning tasks, monitoring progress, and ensuring adherence to project specifications.
  • Project Planning: Review blueprints, specifications, and schedules to plan daily workflows, material needs, and equipment requirements.
  • Concrete Operations: Oversee site preparation, form setting, concrete pouring, finishing, and curing processes, ensuring quality and precision at every stage.
  • Quality Assurance: Inspect work in progress and completed surfaces to verify compliance with design plans, correcting issues like uneven finishes or structural weaknesses.
  • Safety Management: Enforce safety protocols, ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and maintain a hazard-free job site.
  • Resource Coordination: Manage material deliveries, track inventory (e.g., concrete, rebar, sealants), and coordinate equipment use, such as mixers and power trowels.
  • Communication: Serve as the primary point of contact between the crew, operations, Concrete Division Manager, and clients if needed, and report progress, delays, or concerns promptly.
  • Problem Solving: Address on-site challenges, such as weather delays or equipment malfunctions, by adjusting plans and keeping the project on track.

Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum of 3โ€“5 years of experience in concrete work, with a preferred minimum of at least 1โ€“2 years in a supervisory or lead role; proven track record of managing concrete projects.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to perform hands-on tasks as needed, lift up to 50 lbs., and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Skills: Advanced knowledge of concrete techniques (pouring, finishing, curing); ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings; strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; additional training in construction management or concrete technology preferred.
  • Certifications: OSHA-30 certification strongly preferred; ACI (American Concrete Institute) certification or similar is a plus.
  • Driverโ€™s License: Valid Ohio driverโ€™s license required. Must meet an insurability standard. The ability to tow trailers or transport equipment is a plus.
  • Additional Requirements: Ability to pass a drug test and background check as part of a drug-free workplace policy.
  • Phone: Must have cell phone to clock in and out daily, log jobs, and follow other company communications.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors at residential, commercial, or municipal properties, depending on the project.
  • Exposure to dust, noise, chemicals, heavy materials, and seasonal weather is common; some tasks may involve heights or confined spaces.
  • Schedule is typically Monday through Friday, with occasional overtime or weekend work during peak construction or landscaping seasons (spring through fall).
  • Rare but possible multi-day, out-of-town trips, including long-distance travel, and overnight stays.

Salary and Benefits

  • Pay Range: Starting wage aligns with local non-union standards (apart from prevailing wage jobs) and is commensurate with experience.
  • Benefits:
  • Medical-partial percentage paid by the company after 60 days
  • Dental and vision after 60 days, additionally other ancillary benefits
  • 401K with a company match after 6 months of employment
  • Vesting PTO immediately, with the ability to use after 90 days
  • 90-day probation period
