Job description

Visual Media Lab Manager

Summary

Columbus College of Art & Design (CCAD) is seeking a full time Visual Media Lab Manager with experience in film/video production, photography, digital printing/publishing, and an interest in art education. This position will support faculty from multiple departments (Film + Video, Photography, Illustration, Comics, Animation) who teach courses that utilize the Visual Media Labs. This position is responsible for the supervision of the equipment rental counter, studios for shooting and recording (photo/video/sound), darkrooms, and digital print lab. Additionally, this position will support students from all majors who need to utilize the facilities or equipment.

Duties will include training others (students, faculty, and staff) in standard protocol and practices, with an emphasis on safety. The successful candidate will feel comfortable maintaining a database of all CCAD Visual Media Labs equipment used on- and off-campus for insurance and inventory purposes, including handling checkout to students and faculty.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe environment for students, staff and faculty.
  • Maintain equipment in good working order.
  • Supervise the cleaning and organization of each of the lab facilities and equipment
  • Oversee the orderly checkout of equipment; support and maintain department checkout policies through multiple routes published and posted.
  • Maintain an equipment and asset database for insurance and inventory purposes.
  • Hire, train and monitor performance of student employees to assist in monitoring labs and maintaining facilities.
  • Schedule and maintain timecard records of hours worked by student employees.
  • Facilitate the purchasing of lab equipment, supplies, and consumables. Work with the Lab & Studio Manager on budgets and equipment purchasing.
  • Propose and execute projects in regards to facilities upgrades and more efficient use of equipment and laboratories.
  • Maintain and administer safety protocols for students and faculty using the facilities, including but not limited to signage and collection of safety data sheets.
  • Conduct in-house repairs in compliance with safety regulations; arrange with outside vendors for equipment repair when necessary.
  • Establish and maintain vendor relationships & contracts to ensure continuation of existing agreements.
  • Maintain open lines of communication between employees of the college in conjunction with maintenance, supervision, acquisition and security of facilities
  • Gather necessary information and complete troubleshooting to resolve technology issues; escalate to the IT team if needed.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of equipment used within the lab spaces
  • Act as a facilitator of class workshops and individual training sessions for technical equipment and processes when requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position supervises a part-time lab tech and several student employees. Supervisory responsibilities are carried out in accordance with CCAD's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; motivating and incentivizing strong performance; and addressing performance improvement needs.

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred; or a minimum of 3 years' experience working in a campus lab environment or a combination of education and experience.
  • Candidates with lab safety experience or an OSHA certification is desired.
  • Ability to work within a diverse, creative, dynamic environment.

Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
