SUMMARY
Responsible for overall administration of all phases of company claims operations for assigned division including formulation and implementation of company policies, guidelines and standards on claims issues. This is a results-based role at the highest level of the company’s claims department. Ongoing day to day and long term management focused on employee development, customer service, claims best practices and states’ regulatory compliance is of the utmost responsibility. Responsible for the oversight and performance of the company claims administration department, commercial, casualty and complex claims. This includes the analysis and resolution of complex coverage, liability and damages that may need the assistance of appointed subject matter experts and attorneys with litigated and non-litigated claims. This job is responsible for the overall performance of the products the company sells. The performance of the company’s claims department will directly impact the profitability of the company and its ability to continue to compete in its marketplaces.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Establish and administer company and department policies in an ongoing basis as the company establishes new markets for its products.
  • Formulate and manage claims operations budget, and business plan.
  • Develop the structure and means of implementing the claims process in new and existing company business ventures that deliver an optimal performing customer service oriented claims department.
  • Maintain current status on legal, statutory, regulatory, coverage, claims issues and trends and imparts this information to claims management and other department’s managers as appropriate.
  • Insure appropriate adherence and compliance with state regulations, statutes and laws which govern claims activities where the company conducts business.
  • Appoint subject matter experts, lawyers and vendors for the expedient and accurate adjudication of claims.
  • Oversee the reinsurance process and reinsurance claims audits.
  • Maintain overall responsibility for personnel in recruitment and hiring, training and development, evolution and discipline.
  • Oversee the performance of the legal panel within established guidelines and budget.
  • Delegate technical and administrative responsibilities with follow-up for compliance and accountability.
  • Directly control, delegate and grant authority as appropriate on technical claims issues regarding coverage, high exposure claims and those matters regarding sensitive issues and business decisions.
  • Oversee the development, innovation, and implementation of new claims procedures, guidelines and changes in those existing areas.
  • Compile statistical and other data, monitor technical performance and results to improve and maximize productivity, quality, balance and adequacy of staffing.
  • Actively participate, undertake and assist in other corporate duties and responsibilities as directed.
  • Meet or exceed company assigned objectives on a quarterly basis.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly manages the Claims Administration Manager, Auto/Property Unit II & Commercial, Casualty & Complex Claims Unit. Carries out management responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving personnel issues in accordance with company guidelines.

QUALIFICATIONS

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to perform this job successfully.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum 15 years related experience capacity with solid exposure to claims litigation management and at least 5 years in a supervisory or management capacity.
  • Professional designations preferred

Specialized Knowledge and/or Skills:

  • Knowledge of coverages written by the company as well as overall knowledge of the Principles of Insurance.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with others verbally and in writing and listening at all levels.
  • Ability to supervise, motivate and develop personnel.
  • Demonstrated performance indicating sufficient level of competence to accept job responsibilities and accountability.
  • Possess analytical skills and decision-making ability to effectively recognize and evaluate coverage and claim problems.
  • Ability to plan, organize and establish priorities to accomplish job responsibilities.
  • Physical and emotional stamina and stability to perform effectively under adverse conditions, within deadlines and with heavy workloads when necessary.
  • Valid Driver’s License with clean driving record and insured automobile
  • Ability to travel for overnight stays and day trips
  • Proficiency in company supported claim systems, MS Word, MS Excel, Outlook and other software products preferred.
