Professional accounting position responsible for the recording of accounting transactions, the preparation of internal and external financial statements for Topa Insurance and its related companies and financial analysis and data management related to general and moderately complex special projects. This position participates in the implementation of internal controls and procedures to insure the safeguarding of the Company's assets.

  • Prepare the monthly, quarterly, and annual GAAP and Statutory financial statements and filings for both external and internal users analyzing unusual fluctuations, ratios, and highlighting trends and bringing these trends to management's attention.
  • Processes downloads and manual non-system entries to the general ledger
  • Prepare and document all journal ledger entries entered into the general ledger system. This information will include all required fields, which will allow the information to be included in all external GAAP and Statutory filings. The manual adjustments will also include all the necessary information to provide for complete and comparable internal management reports.
  • May perform investment accounting functions, e.g. investment inventory, valuations, and income corresponding as necessary with the investment advisor, custodian, and the NAIC-SVO
  • Prepares monthly account reconciliations of all assigned balance sheet accounts and obtains the Controller's approval as required.
  • Prepare and provide all requested schedules and working papers by the parent company to assist in the preparation of the consolidated tax return and consolidated financial statement.
  • The participation in special projects requested by management. Projects will require the analytical ability to perform medium to complex tasks, along with the use of individual judgement in deciding whether or not the requested information will provide management with enough information to make a completely informed decision.
  • Maintain and develop a strong understanding of the insurance industry and the accounting implications of changes in both GAAP and SAP on Topa and its subsidiaries' operations. This is to be accomplished through continuing education by attending industry seminars and industry associations when possible.
  • Participate in both GAAP audits and statutory examinations preparing schedules as requested and providing copies of supporting working papers as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

· Requires a four (4) year degree in accounting or business.

· Work experience of at least 3 years demonstrating knowledge of accounting, analysis and data management.

Specialized Knowledge and/or Skills:

· Excellent judgement and the ability to make independent decisions in all areas of assigned responsibility.

· The ability to compile data and create useful management reports by utilizing the resources available in the department in a timely manner.

· Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Access, GL software, and Database management software.

· In addition this position must be computer literate and able to understand and use the other systems within the Company, related to its position

· This position will require strong interpersonal skills and excellent verbal and written communication skills.
