The Chief Development Officer (CDO) is a member of the Executive Team with responsibility for generating strategic direction and sustainable revenue sources aligned to United Way’s strategic plan. The CDO will have primary responsibility for establishing and implementing the infrastructure needed to sustain and grow revenue through the campaign cabinet, major gifts, grants, special events, corporate and foundation support. S/he will expand and diversify the organization’s donor base/pipeline and work closely with other team members to secure funding for new initiatives. The CDO will support board and Campaign Cabinet members as fundraise on behalf of the organization.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Formulates short and long-term fundraising effort goals.
  • Develops actionable strategies for meeting and exceeding those goals.
  • Structures the fund development team to best approach a variety of financial development goals.
  • Provides vision and direct leadership over the Campaign Cabinet.
  • Finds additional ways to recruit, retain and inspire membership to raise funds for the annual UWSEM Campaign.
  • Raises awareness of the organization and its primary goals through outreach efforts, regular events in the community, presentations, and media relations.
  • Works closely with the Community Impact leadership.
  • Builds strong relationships with Board Members and volunteers.
  • Supports executive staff, board members, and other volunteers in all aspects of donor stewardship and solicitation; provide training/coaching as needed.
  • Maintains an in-depth knowledge of fundraising best practices and strategies.
  • Develops and leads a high-caliber enthusiastic staff of fundraising professionals.
  • Helps build an environment of open communication and collaboration within the department and the organization.
  • Serves as an exceptional communicator, articulate, passionate and credible public presence for UWSEM as well as an effective, inspirational and focused leader.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Outstanding writing and communication skills: an attentive listener, articulate speaker, and clear and persuasive writer.
  • Strong cultural awareness with the ability to build relationships with donors from varied and diverse backgrounds and foster an inclusive donor engagement strategy.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of development strategies, social media campaigning, and public relations.
  • Excellent strategic, organizational and project management skills and ability to work with a wide variety of potential donors and supporters.
  • Decisive, “roll-up-the sleeves,” results-oriented individual who can keep seemingly diverse projects moving forward within a consistent strategic framework.
  • Must have the ability to motivate and inspire confidence among staff, colleagues, volunteers and donors and keep order amongst competing priorities. A leader whom people want to follow.
  • Must possess a strong business knowledge and ability to think in a variety of business environments.
  • A self-motivated, confident and influential style that is coupled with sensitivity and flexibility. A strong leader with high emotional intelligence and professional standards.
  • A four-year degree from an accredited college or university is required. A Master’s or advanced degree is preferred.
  • At least 10 years with a proven track record of fundraising experience gained in relevant positions of increasing responsibility and scope. At least 5 years of direct people leadership with both direct and indirect reports and the ability to develop/coach staff and drive change.
  • Demonstrated fundraising success in corporate, foundation, workplace, individual and major gifts along with additional sources of revenue generation.
  • Change Management experience – training team members and others in the organization to think creatively and manage through times of organizational transition. Proven success in maintaining the “blocking and tackling” of fundraising while exploring new technologies and methods of connection with donors.
  • Certification from the Association of Fundraising Professionals or equivalent is highly desired.
