POSITION TITLE: DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

REPORTS TO: Regional Vice President of Development

Special Olympics New York athletes are truly the greatest athletes in the world. Sure, they all want to win, but our athletes know something that many other athletes do not. Winning is not everything -- competing and giving the best effort -- this is what makes an athlete great.

Executes a portfolio of community-based events, with accountability for significant income targets, as well as event-related mission and advocacy activities. Ensures goal achievement through the effective leadership, engagement empowerment and mobilization of event volunteers.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: Bachelor’s degree in related field and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. One to three years related experience, ideally working within a multi-million dollar organization.

JOB SUMMARY:

Executes a portfolio of community-based events, with accountability for significant income targets, as well as event-related mission and advocacy activities. Ensures goal achievement through the effective leadership, engagement empowerment and mobilization of event volunteers.

· Responsible for effectively and efficiently completing activities and meeting target deadlines in order to execute successful events.

· Implements best practices for event revenue growth; drives and encourages creativity and innovation at the event level.

· Monitors financial expenditures and progress against budgetary plan and takes appropriate measures to meet top line and bottom line goals ensuring a high ROI in meeting revenue targets.

· Engages, recruits, trains and manages relationships with community volunteers to ensure successful events execution.

· Engages the community to drive increased event participation; including event committee, teams, team members, sponsors, athlete/caregiver engagement, and youth engagement.

· Partners with regional and HQ offices, services functions and ensures appropriate support is provided for successful execution of events.

· Utilizes available tools and processes to maximize event results, including online fundraising.

· Utilizes and responds to customer experience survey, comparative event and success factor data.

· Utilizes defined processes to ensure timely and accurate event data entry.

· Ensures compliance with Special Olympics New York policies, including employment, risk management, event and cash handling, and financial controls.

· Ability and comfort level to work with people of all abilities. Build relationships with our Athletes and families to engage in fundraising events and leadership opportunities.

· Models and fosters behavior that establishes a culture that values the staff/volunteer partnership, and is consistent with the values, goals, and objectives of the organization to create an atmosphere of trust, cooperation, accountability, empowerment, and dedication to the mission.

In addition to the responsibilities identified above, may be requested or required to perform other duties and/or responsibilities, by management on a non-regular basis.

Must have valid driver’s license Must be able to staff evening and weekend committee meetings, events and programs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Position requires working both standing and sitting. Must be able to lift and carry light loads (5-30 pounds for short distances, approximately one block).
