Position Overview

Maya Angelou Public Charter High School is seeking a Special Education Teacher/Case Manager to fill an immediate opening. Our special education teachers will work as co-teachers in the high school classrooms and will collaborate with content teachers to serve special education students. Students who are not identified as special education students may require academic remediation and need creative and careful instruction to accelerate their learning.

All teachers at MAPCS are expected to support the school-wide goals of emphasizing literacy and numeracy, helping students develop their critical thinking abilities, driving all students toward mastery and understanding, and helping students find their strengths and talents to use them to address weaknesses and overcome fears. There is an emphasis upon collecting and utilizing a broad range of data to drive instruction, upon weaving social justice themes into instructional content and assessment and collaborative team teaching to meet the needs of all of our students. In addition, MAPCS embraces a competency-based instructional program where students develop key skills and competencies to prepare them for postsecondary and career success.

Teacher Responsibilities
  • Plan backward to align all lessons, activities, and assessments
  • Design assessments that accurately assess student progress and/or incorporate digital assessments
  • Identify and address individual students' social, emotional, and behavioral learning needs and barriers
  • Communicate with students and keep them informed of their progress
  • Collaborate with other teachers, tutors, and lab monitor(s) to analyze data, group students, teach, and assign interventions
  • Participate in internal and external professional development opportunities
  • Assessing learning styles, modalities and interests of students and implement differentiated instruction to meet individual students' needs
  • Work with general education teacher(s) to determine accommodations and modifications needed to meet the needs of students with disabilities in the general education classroom.
  • Co-plan with general education teachers and modify all lesson plans for various academic levels
  • Deliver student instruction in modalities instituted by school and assigned program (may include but are not limited to: Individual or Group Direct Synchronous Instruction, Learning Support, Life Skills Support, Itinerant Support, Resource Room Support, co-teaching, writing lesson plans, telephone conferencing and instruction, Parent Learning Opportunities).
  • Sponsor/Co-sponsor a student club/organization
  • Other duties as assigned

Case Manager Responsibilities
  • Communicate with families regularly regarding grades, progress, and behavior
  • Facilitate IEP and Triennial Eligibility meetings
  • Notify all staff who have contact with the student regarding their individual responsibilities
  • Collect, analyze, and report data in a meaningful way
  • Complete all sections of IEP Progress section and Eligibility Determination sections in SEDS
  • Take copious notes in IEP, Eligibility, and MDT meetings to be faxed or uploaded into SEDS
  • Hold weekly meetings with students regarding academic and behavioral progress
  • Develop and Implement IEPs with measurable goals using Progress Monitoring.
  • Completes all special education paperwork accurately, according to regulations, and on time.
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Bachelor's degree in special education, or a related degree with a heavy focus on literacy, basic computation or quantitative skills
  • Eligibility for certification in special education area
  • Teaching experience with youth at the secondary level
  • Familiarity with research-based instructional methods and curriculum development
  • Ability to work collaboratively to support student academic and personal development
  • Knowledge of student-centered instruction, performance based assessments and youth development principles
