As a Deputy Fire Marshal for our organization, you’ll work with a variety of different entities to promote effective fire prevention strategies, including fire code enforcement and instructing the general public regarding fire codes and fire safety. After a fire, you’ll use the skills you acquire through provided training to perform fire investigations. Renton Regional Fire Authority has one position currently open and will fill either a Deputy Fire Marshal I, II or III position depending on qualifications. The salary range for Deputy Fire Marshal I is $68,531 - $83,500, Deputy Fire Marshal II is $71,978 - $87,744, and Deputy Fire Marshal III is $75,650 - $92,187 annually.
Performs basic to complex inspections to enforce fire prevention laws, ordinances and codes; promote the development and use of effective fire prevention methods; provide instruction to the general public regarding fire codes and prevention; and perform basic fire scene investigation.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS
· Ability to:
o Inspect businesses, buildings and facilities to assure compliance with fire codes, laws and ordinances.
o Provide instruction to civic groups, school children and others regarding fire inspection and prevention.
o Prepare displays, teaching materials and make oral presentations.
o Identify fire hazards and causes.
o Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
o Read, interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
o Maintain records and prepare reports.
o Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
o Respond to fire-related incidents to investigate the cause and origin as assigned.
o Remain current with emerging technologies as they relate to field of specialty.
o Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
· Knowledge of:
o Principles and practices of fire science.
o Methods, materials and equipment used in fire suppression.
o Fire prevention laws, ordinances and codes.
o Record-keeping techniques.
o Oral and written communication skills.
o Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
o Technical aspects of field of specialty.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Applicant shall possess the following for Deputy Fire Marshal II:
· A minimum of two-years work experience as a Deputy Fire Marshal I;
· Completion of the current NFPA Standard 1031, "Professional Qualifications for Fire Inspector I;"
· The performance standards for Level I shall be signed-off and have successfully passed testing prior to progressing to the Deputy Fire Marshal II level.
· ICC Fire Inspector I Certification
Applicant shall possess the following for Deputy Fire Marshal III:
· Deputy Fire Marshal II shall complete performance standards for Level II as listed in the current NFPA 1031 Standard.
· Inspector level II shall work in the position of level II inspector for a minimum of three years.
· ICC Fire Inspector II Certification.
