Rest of World is new international journalism newsroom, launching Q1 2020, that’s focused on exploring the impact of technology beyond the Western bubble. Our goal is to surface the often surprising and unintended effects of tech in places that get little attention from mainstream news outlets.

Through compelling storytelling and fresh, innovative design, our digital magazine will explore the spaces where tech, culture and human experience collide. We are a mission-driven nonprofit startup that aims to push forward how we understand technology’s role in rapidly changing cultures.

To build out our vision, we are seeking a curious, motivated and hardworking Reporter-Researcher.

The ideal candidate will be someone who deeply curious about the world, tenacious and thorough in their approach to uncovering a good story or telling detail, and thrives in a highly collaborative startup environment. The Reporter-Researcher will be a creative engine of ideas and approaches, and can adapt to any task or challenge thrown their way — especially when reporting in international contexts. We’re looking for a well-rounded utility player who combines rigorous reporting and research skills with a passion for exploring cultures and change.

This role is based in our New York office.

Responsibilities

  • Pitching, reporting and writing stories about global technology issues outside of the Western world

  • Research and reporting on international tech and culture, including but not limited to general research briefs, chasing down story leads and tips, and writing your own stories for publication.

  • Some fact-checking of pieces to prepare them for publication

Qualifications

  • 3+ years experience in journalism or publishing

  • First- or second-language skills beyond English are a major plus.

  • Experience reporting on international issues, business or tech coverage preferred.

  • A serious desire to bring new information into the world and an obsession with telling great stories

  • Strong research skills, especially across different regions, cultures and languages

  • Curiosity about international stories and/or the use of technology abroad is a plus

  • A strong work ethic, comfort with startup conditions, a motivated self-starter

  • Collaborative, enjoys working in teams with different disciplines and learning from others
