Our client is a well-funded clean energy company with breakthrough technology destined to play a major role in helping utilities meet future energy demands. The company is currently seeking to add a Mechanical Designer.


Reporting to the Director of Mechanical Engineering, the Mechanical Designer is a key member of the Engineering team responsible for the design of large machinery for the grid.


  • Create 3D models and detailed design documentation for a variety of mechanical components and assemblies associated with reciprocating air compression.
  • Responsible for ensuring the integration and assembly of components from domestic and international sources
  • Work closely with engineering team members to incorporate internally designed and COTS hardware components into system level 3D product models
  • Produce detailed design documentation for fabricated components including but not limited to castings, forgings, stock shapes, metallic and plastic materials
  • Apply the principles of ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing to detailed designs
  • Develop written specifications for the procurement of COTS components
  • Design for manufacturability, assembly, and maintainability
  • Identify and pursue cost reduction opportunities
  • Work closely with suppliers and manufacturing personnel to address production issues
  • Work with service organization to address issues in deployed systems
  • Work with engineering team members on the development of laboratory and product development test apparatus
  • Some travel required; supplier visits, field issue resolution
  • Other duties as needed or assigned


  • 5+ years CAD experience
  • 3+ years solid modeling experience
  • 5+ years experience in the design and fabrication of heavy machine components is a key job requirement
  • Expertise in the application of GDT per ASME Y14.5 is essential
  • Excellent time management, organizational, and prioritization skills
  • Excellent problem solving skills, and ability to resolve problems in a timely manner
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, to properly communicate relevant information to team members and management
  • Must be comfortable working with mixed unit systems; SI primarily, US customary as required
  • Experience in the design of diesel engines, gas compressors or other reciprocating machinery is ideal.
  • Experience with Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks or other 3D CAD package
  • Experience with Vault, PDM or other product documentation package
