Job Purpose To assist the licensed Veterinarian with the care of the GDA canines/felines. Duties and Responsibilities Under the direction of the Veterinarian, oversees that the Vet department operates safely and efficiently and that the GDA dogs in the program have their needs met in a timely manner. Performs blood draws and laboratory tests. Supervises the procedures that the Vet tech is able to perform. Aides the Veterinarian in the diagnosis of some chronic issues that may be present. Responsible to assure that results of the examination/visits get entered into the appropriate record in a timely manner. Interacts with the graduates and puppy raisers for more serious issues. Takes x-rays as ordered and assures that everyone’s radiation badge is updated per state regulations. Keeps Vet room clean at all times. Provides and oversees anesthesia administration during surgery and/or special procedures. Recovers animals as needed. Responsible to see that all equipment is clean, in working order and is turned off at end of day. Clean countertops, tables and autoclave. Assure all packs are ready for use. Perform procedures as required. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications High School diploma or GED Registered Veterinary Technician, licensed to practice in California required Minimum 3 years of experience working with canines Must possess excellent interpersonal skills and have the ability to interact with all types of people/personalities Experience in a non-profit environment a plus Working Conditions Multiple interruptions Noise level high due to barking dogs Working in a small area Above average number of phone inquires Physical Requirements Must be able to lift a minimum of 60 lbs. and 80 lbs. with assistance Must be able to stand for long periods of time Ability to use hands and arms in handling, positioning and manipulating different items and dogs.
