The Packaging Engineer owns all packaging initiatives and is responsible for the development of new, innovative food packaging solutions, collaboratively with Product Development, Engineering, Operations and Supply Chain. This role will have responsibilities supporting manufacturing operations to drive efficiencies, cost savings initiatives and technology transfer from Packaging Development/Engineering to Operations.
The Packaging Engineer has key responsibilities and ownership at each stage of the product lifecycle including (but not limited to):
o Participate in ideation sessions.
o Provide consultative input and support to the development process around manufacturability, process design, and materials selection considerations.
o Support the conceptualization, initiation, development and implementation of new and improved food packages and processes including: design generation, engineering specifications, machinery qualification, functionality and quality testing and technology transfer.
o Drive implementation and support for new product launches, cost savings & operations efficiency initiatives and quality investigations.
o Deliver results by working in a collaborative, cross-functional environment with Product Development, Food Safety/Food Quality, Supply Chain and Operations to manage the material process qualification.
o Provide manufacturing and Product Development inputs to overall costing model.
o Design, schedule, and lead all required on-site and off-site process and equipment testing.
o Interpret packaging test procedures and results to support the effective design, qualification, validation and implementation of new food package systems and packaging technology while providing explanations and forward actions to the project team; tests include shelf life, failure mode testing and ship tests.
o Partner with Engineering and Operations to ensure that packaging equipment/material system specifications, functionality and design are appropriate for use.
o Establish and maintain packaging vendors/supplier relationships.
o Support company/customer sustainability initiatives.
o Other duties as assigned.
o Subject matter expert for packaging materials, processes and testing and packaging lead for the organization.
o Function as Packaging Development leader for Initial Risk Assessments and Failure Mode & Effect Analysis.
o Lead process of documenting all packaging specifications for existing/new products.
o Serve as the Technology lead in the area of breakthrough packaging and industry trends by bringing concepts and ideas to the team for evaluation.
Skills & Knowledge
Ø Proven technical skills in packaging science and technology
Ø Excellent internal and external communication skills including presenting information to customers and all levels of the internal team
Ø Ability to lead projects and launches with cross-functional groups
Ø Excellent organization skills including project management and managing multiple product families
Ø Advanced computer/technology skills including Microsoft Office and experience with project management software, nutritional analysis software, and technical testing programs
Ø Strong coaching and training skills
Ø Creativity and the ability to formulate ideas
Ø Ability to manage multiple projects at different stages in the product lifecycle
Ø Strong math skills; experience with common financial concepts
Education & Experience
Ø BS/BA degree in Packaging Engineering/Technology/Science or related engineering field
Ø 5+ years of related experience, preferably in Food, R&D and manufacturing, including familiarity with production equipment
Ø Corporate level Research & Development work
Ø Experience commercializing packaged food products from bench top to full scale production
Ø Experience sourcing materials/working with suppliers
Ø Experience working with regulatory agencies
Ø Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with minimal direct supervision and strong demonstrated leadership, interpersonal skills and self-initiative skills
Ø Strong verbal/written communication skills, analytical and problem-solving skills
Ø Able to stand for extended periods of time
Ø Able to lift up to 20 lbs.
Ø Able to work in both hot/warm conditions
Ø Comfortable with a moderate noise level
Ø Able to work in an environment with peanuts and tree nuts
