General Job Description:

The Director of Philanthropy Strategy & Engagement is a customer-facing role responsible for the engagement, stewardship, and retention of Forefront’s Grantmaker Members. The Director contributes to strategy and leads implementation of grantmaker-focused programs including assigned Member Networks and special events. This position also works collaboratively across the organization to provide the full suite of member services.

Essential Job Duties and Expected Outcomes:

  1. Actively provide thought leadership, monitor sector trends, and increase Forefront’s visibility and positioning as a resource on philanthropic issues.
  2. Steward Grantmaker Member engagement in all relevant Forefront activities. Coordinate with relevant staff to ensure exceptional customer experience at all points of contact and work closely with Development and Administrative teams to ensure effective customer relationship management for all Grantmaker Members.
  3. Manage onboarding of new Grantmaker Members and coordinate check-ins with all current members throughout the year.
  4. Attend Forefront events, networking events, and related meetings where designated member and community stakeholders are represented to enhance relationships with current members. Actively partner with Development and broader Member Engagement teams to identify, cultivate and recruit prospective new members.
  5. Cultivate opportunities for Grantmaker Members to demonstrate leadership through engagement with Forefront’s initiatives, including Member Networks. Support and facilitate assigned Member Network planning and goal setting processes with volunteer leaders. Provide ongoing communications, facilitation, and other supports to volunteer leaders as needed.
  6. Manage the planning of grantmaker-focused programs to ensure responsiveness to members’ needs and interests. Implement assigned meetings and programs including coordinating equipment and room set up with relevant staff. Ensure high quality and timely operation of all assigned programs.
  7. Demonstrate leadership in accordance with Forefront’s mission and vision, as well as its values of hospitality, inclusion, and integrity.
  8. Partner with broader Member Engagement team (Education, Nonprofit Engagement, etc.), Policy, Development & Communications, Administration, as well as members of our Senior Team to maximize relationships and engagement opportunities.
  9. Meet annual budget goals set in annual planning process.
  10. Assist in maintaining member database and, in collaboration with other staff, prepare content of periodic reports to demonstrate Member Engagement’s progress toward annual objectives.
  11. Develops and supervises assigned staff, including scheduling and job assignment; counseling/coaching; development and training; performance evaluation; and recommending salary, disciplinary, and other personnel actions in accord with relevant policies and procedures.
  12. Maintain required job skills and core professional competencies. Attend and participate in required educational programs and staff meetings.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.

Performance Measures:

  • Grantmaker engagement in Forefront programs and initiatives meets established goals.
  • New Grantmaker Members are onboarded promptly, and regular contact with all current Grantmaker Members is maintained throughout the year.
  • Meets all member retention and annual growth goals in annual operating plan.
  • Grantmaker-focused programming is creative, well developed, and professionally executed.
  • Forefront’s visibility and positioning as a resource on philanthropic issues increases. Discovery and communication of new reference sources and other materials is continually pursued.
  • Demonstrates excellent customer service both internally and externally. Member inquiries are handled in a timely and friendly manner within 24 hours.
  • Consults as appropriate with other staff to respond effectively to member inquiries.
  • Follow up and closure after programs, including acknowledgements, completion and posting of summary notes and oversight of completion of attendance reports, meet established deadlines.
  • In partnership with Communications team, ensure marketing materials and other communications or written materials are professionally prepared and kept up-to-date.
  • Evaluation plan is implemented in accordance with established timeline.
  • Member database is maintained accurately and in a timely way.
  • Grantmaker programs and budgets are achieved in accord with the annual operating plan.

Position Qualifications:

  • Proven project management skills; ability to multi-task and prioritize concurrent projects and day to day tasks within a fast-paced environment.
  • Impeccable customer service skills. Demonstrated ability to maintain a professional demeanor suitable for our highest-level stakeholders.
  • Ability to anticipate workload and effectively leverage relationships with colleagues and stakeholders to meet deadlines and produce high quality work.
  • Demonstrated experience as a strong collaborator with the ability to energize and motivate people.
  • Outstanding communication skills with the ability to modify tone and communications vehicle to best suit the audience.
  • Strong and current knowledge of Illinois’ philanthropic community.
  • Accepts guidance and responds well to feedback. Displays maturity, good judgment, enthusiasm, personal motivation and development.
  • Strong and current knowledge of Illinois’ philanthropic community.
  • Fully proficient with Microsoft Office Environment. Salesforce experience a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.

About Forefront:

The Revenue Development and Communications Department conducts a range of activities to advance the goals of Forefront in the areas of communications, marketing, fundraising, membership recruitment, retention and supports the communications and marketing needs of Forefront staff.
