About the position: The Vice President of Marketing and Communication will lead the development and implementation of an integrated marketing strategy to advance First Book’s mission and goals and distinguish the organization’s leadership in the social sector. This individual will oversee strategies that enhance the organization’s brand and engage and motivate multiple target audiences to take action to achieve goals. In particular, this individual will:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement an integrated marketing plan and strategies to raise awareness of and promote products and services to Title 1 schools, after school programs, and other eligible programs working with children from low-income families
o establish and drive the organization’s marketing goals and performance measurement, supporting the continued integration of current private sector marketing practices appropriate to and aligned with First Book’s public sector mission
o in cooperation with colleagues, help develop new and/or refine existing products, services, marketing partnerships and distribution channels that further First Book’s mission
o create regular or ongoing opportunities to gather feedback from and/or engage First Book’s “recipient programs,” partners, volunteers, donors and other stakeholders as part of a continuous improvement / relationship management support process
  • Lead cross-departmental teams for specific projects and initiatives
  • Frame the branding and strategic direction of First Book’s Web site and online marketing initiatives and provide guidance to internal staff and external consultants to align with the organization’s brand strategy
  • Supervise the Communications staff, which includes shaping traditional and social media outreach strategies to promote First Book and its corporate partner and subsidiary program campaigns, develop systems for tracking and organizing relevant coverage, and oversee the content and design of e-newsletters and printed materials
  • Recommend innovative marketing and leadership practices in line with First Book’s position as a leader in social entrepreneurship
  • Manage marketing, communication, and public relations projects as needed
Ideal Candidate Profile: Ideal candidates will be highly skilled marketing professionals who are drawn to First Book’s mission and have a private sector head and a public sector heart. Applicants must be adept at addressing diverse audiences and needs -- from Board members to local programs that receive First Book resources. Specific requirements include:
  • Minimum of ten years experience demonstrating increased levels of responsibility and innovation in corporate and nonprofit organizations. Minimum of five years managerial responsibility in marketing and/or communication arenas
  • Thorough grounding in multiple marketing disciplines, including new and emerging media, social media and online platforms
  • Track record demonstrating ability to craft and execute innovative marketing strategies
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in highly collegial, team-based environment
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills
  • Must have an “in the trenches” mentality, ability to thrive in a lean, fast-paced environment, and respond to multiple priorities, with the information and resources at hand
  • Must exude passion, confidence, and integrity
  • Excellent sense of humor and uncommonly good common sense
  • Bachelor’s degree required; MBA or Masters Degree preferred
