The Colorado Coalition for the Homeless seeks a General Legal Counsel to serve as a member of the executive team with responsibility for overseeing the legal affairs of the organization, managing and providing oversight of outside counsel, assessing and managing the legal risks facing the organization in coordination with the CEO, and performing various direct legal tasks related to the mission of the organization. This position is located at 2111 Champa Street Denver CO 80205 and reports to the President and CEO.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Oversee and advise on matters of corporate governance, finance, contracts, compliance, insurance, risk management, real estate, and employment.
  2. Provide expert and strategic legal advice to executive team and management;
  3. Identify proactive solutions that will eliminate or mitigate risks.
  4. Advise and represent staff on subpoenas and confidentiality issues.
  5. Draft, negotiate, and review a variety of contracts and other agreements, and oversee the contract management function, including ensuring that contract processes are up-to-date, effective, minimize risks, and maximize legal rights.
  6. In coordination with VP of Human Resources and with the assistance of outside counsel as needed, review and ensure legal compliance with the organization’s employee handbook, and provide advice on human resources matters.
  7. In coordination with Chief Quality and Information Officer, provide legal guidance and assistance on HIPAA and other privacy compliance issues.
  8. In coordination with Chief Real Estate Officer and Chief Financial Officer, manage risk, liability, and financial exposure, including the provision of insurance coverage.
  9. Develop and oversee client and tenant appeals and due process requirements in accordance with HUD and Housing Authority guidance.
  10. Stay abreast of legal research and analyze legal issues that affect the organization and its activities at the local, state, and federal levels, and prepare findings, recommendations, templates, and plans to effectively advise the organization.
  11. Assist in developing and presenting training on legal issues.
  12. Strategically consult with and help effectively manage the organization’s outside counsel.
  13. Manage the reporting and other corporate compliance requirements for the organization.
  14. Other duties and projects as assigned by the CEO.

Qualifications Summary

  1. A minimum of five years’ experience providing in-house legal services or similar experience in a law firm or public agency.
  2. Experience with non-profit organizations highly preferred.
  3. Preferred experience with governmental grants, housing, health care, and employment law.
  4. Preferred experience with Low Income Housing Tax Credits and housing development.
  5. J.D. degree and admittance to the bar in Colorado preferred.

The mission of The Colorado Coalition for the Homeless is to work collaboratively toward the prevention of homelessness and the creation of lasting solutions for homeless and at-risk families, children and individuals throughout Colorado. The Coalition advocates for and provides a continuum of housing and a variety of services to improve the health, well-being, and stability of those it serves.

Our History
CCH was established in 1984 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. It was founded by a group of individuals with a will to take action on behalf of Colorado's homeless. They recognized the struggles of working people living in poverty. And they refused to tolerate the dangers faced by those people sleeping in their cars, in tents, or on the streets.

More than 30 years later, many of the underlying social causes of homelessness persist, like poverty, shortages of affordable housing, and unattainable healthcare. The Coalition's integrated housing, healthcare, and supportive service programs have been highly effective at responding to these conditions over time.
