Design Director

As the Design Director, you are a member of the leadership team and responsible for the people, process and production of all things design as a discipline within our brand strategy and creative team. You will be reporting to the Creative Director and working closely with both the Content Director and Planning Director to ensure polished, intentional design underlies everything we deliver to our clients.

You will spend some of your time building processes and mentoring others, some of it presenting and defending our visual design work and running design workshops with clients, and some of it working on exceptional design projects of your own. We are seeking someone who is both an insanely talented visual artist and a superb coach, storyteller and communicator who can lead others.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Craft superb brand design including identities, experiences, print pieces and advertisements (note that UI/UX is nested under the Digital team and will not be a responsibility of your team).

  • Lead the process and approach of our design capability.

  • Manage a small but mighty team of two, providing coaching, mentorship and accountability. As BRINK grows, this team will undoubtedly grow under your leadership.

  • Contribute creative concepts and ideas on brand stories and campaigns.

  • Conduct client workshops, co-creating and building trust with clients.

  • Review and approve all design materials and present them to the Creative Director.

A typical day involves:

  • Crafting pixels and making magic in Adobe Creative Suite on brand identities, experiences, advertisements, etc.

  • Collaborating with the Content Team to develop print, out-of-home and display advertisements where copy and art work together beautifully.

  • Working with the Planning Team to develop polished presentations for brand strategies and new business pitches.

  • Brainstorming, spitballing and coaching with the other creatives.

  • Meeting with the Creative Director to receive briefs and discuss project timelines and resources, ensuring the design team always delivers on time and on budget.

  • Presenting to clients and getting feedback, sometimes brutal and sometimes friendly, able to both defend our work but also get the root of their concerns or feedback to iterate and improve.

  • Developing big and bold creative ideas that are rooted in strategy, intentional and awe-inspiring for the audience they are intended.

  • Managing tasks in a project management suite for the Design team, including good communication, clear instructions and timely reviews and approvals.

  • Managing outside vendor relationships (such as print shops) and finding freelance support in the rare circumstances it is necessary.

  • Helping maintain a portfolio and case studies where design is the star.

We envision a superb Design Director having:

  • Amazing artistic abilities including mastery of colors, typography, creative tone and the fundamentals of good design.

  • Expert level skills in Adobe Creative Suite.

  • Tremendous ability to interpret vision into execution in new and appealing ways.

  • Strong presentation skills, able to razzle and dazzle and sell creative to those who might be buying it both internally and externally.

  • Tight organization, attention to detail, and time management skills. No deadlines missed nor details forgotten.

  • Willingness to learn and incorporate feedback and not take criticism personally.

  • Strong work ethic and ability to work at a fast pace.

  • Experience in an agency or agency-like environment.


  • An amazing portfolio of work.

  • At least 7 years of proven experience in a fast paced agency environment including time in a position of seniority.

Once this COVID nightmare is over, we are looking for someone who will work out of our Tucson studio at least 3 days a week as we strongly value in-person collaboration and the creativity that yields. You may be entirely remote in the interim.

We would be willing to help cover relocation expenses when the time comes for anyone not already in Tucson.
