Senior Mechanical Engineer, Structures & Mechanisms (Fractional)

AdAstra

Los Angeles, CA

$112K - $148K/yr

Contractor

Posted 10 days ago

Job description

About the Company

Our client is a Southern California new-space hardtech startup developing an advanced reentry vehicle, and they are at a decisive moment in their program. They need a senior mechanical engineer who has done this before — someone who can walk in on day one, understand the design space immediately, and start executing. The goal is CDR-level mechanical redesign by August 2026.

This is one of the most urgent and high-impact fractional engagements in new space right now.

About the Role

WHAT YOU WILL DO

You will take direct ownership of the structural and mechanisms design effort, driving the program to a critical design review milestone. The work is real — hands in the CAD, drawings released, decisions made. You will work closely with senior technical consultants already on the program and report directly to company leadership.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

You are a hands-on principal-level mechanical engineer. You have worked on structures or mechanisms that flew — or were built to fly — on spacecraft or advanced aircraft programs. You personally designed and released drawings; you were not the person who supervised the people who did. You have experience with mechanisms, structural design, or both. Experience with composites or reentry-relevant structures is a meaningful differentiator. If you have worked on something like grid fins, deployment mechanisms, or complex structural assemblies on a high-performance vehicle, you are exactly who we are looking for.

You are a collaborative builder, not a disruptor. You thrive in lean environments where ownership is high and bureaucracy is low.

SpaceX or similar pedigree.

ENGAGEMENT DETAILS

Format: Full-time sprint (5 days per week) preferred, open to fewer hours if needed

Duration: Ongoing, with potential to convert to full-time

Location: Onsite full time strongly preferred. Open to hybrid where you come in when needed.

ITAR Requirement

  • To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State. Learn more about the ITAR here.

Equal Opportunity

Our client is an equal opportunity employer. They evaluate qualified applicants without regard to race, color, religion, gender, national origin/ethnicity, veteran status, disability status, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, mental or physical disability or any other legally protected status.

About AdAstra Reserve

This role is being placed through AdAstra Reserve, a fractional talent program operated by AdAstra.

AdAstra Reserve was built around a simple observation: the best engineers in hardtech do not always want a traditional full-time job. Some have recently retired from major programs and are not ready to stop building. Some want to take on focused, meaningful work between chapters of their career. Some want to contribute to a mission they believe in without signing a five-year lease on their life.

Reserve connects those engineers with high-growth space companies that need their skills now — not in six months after a drawn-out hiring process. Engagements are structured as defined sprints (full-time for a project) or ongoing fractional arrangements (part-time on a set number of hours per week). There is no commitment beyond the agreed scope, and many engagements lead to full-time opportunities for candidates who want them.

If you are a high-caliber engineer who has built and shipped real hardware in new space or adjacent fields and this sounds like a model that fits your life, we would love to talk to you — whether or not a specific posting above is the right fit right now.

At AdAstra, we catalyze the innovations that future generations depend on by placing the right people in the right seats. Our dedicated work enables inconceivable technology from Earth, to the stars. And it’s all because of trailblazing talent like you - those driven to do what’s never been done before. We care about long term relationships with both candidates and companies.
