The Recreation Specialist assists with the development, coordination and implementation of assigned programs or projects within the Recreation Department, and may be assigned a wide variety of tasks throughout the six divisions of the department. The Recreation Specialist will act as a front-line staff member and lend support to programs and coverage of the Aquatics area and Guest Services, (front desk operations).

Work Environment
Work performed is both indoors and outdoors at that Avon Recreation Center and local Eagle County schools and may involve all weather conditions, varied hours and days and may include holidays.
Essential Functions
Assists the Aquatics Supervisor with schedule development and maintenance; ensures adequate coverage is in place for each day, providing lifeguard coverage as needed
Assists the Swim Program Supervisor with swim lesson development and instruction
Acts as the weekend supervisor; provides back-up support coverage to guest services and aquatics; ensures water quality in all four pools
Assists Program Supervisor with program coverage and development
Assists in the planning of recreational and educational activities that provide children with opportunities to learn and develop skills
Monitors and maintains cleanliness and safety of program areas in accordance with Colorado State Health Department and Town of Avon guidelines and regulations
Inspects facilities and equipment as needed to ensure a safe and positive experience for patrons
Ensures safety of patrons, maintains safety and health standards of adult and youth equipment and programs and responds to emergency situations as necessary
Monitors activities in and around the weight rooms, cardio room and fitness studios to prevent injuries, accidents and responds to emergencies as necessary
Reports any accidents/incidents to supervisor and submits appropriate completed forms to supervisor within 24 hours
Ensures that emergency and first aid forms are completed correctly
Assists Recreation Director with the management of the fitness division
Effectively communicates with parents as needed; acts as youth program counselor as necessary
Ensures positive customer interaction, seeks out and obtains input on new programs and levels of interests by working closely with community
Updates program information and communicates with Guest Services Supervisor to ensure accurate information is available to patrons and at the front desk
Manages complaints involving patrons and disciplinary issues involving staff and reports any changes, conflicts or unsafe circumstances to supervisor
Establishes maintenance and equipment inspection logs; ensures daily inspections at facility opening for equipment conditions, vandalism, cleaning and necessary supplies; and reports any needs or situations to supervisor
Requests and orders approved supplies and equipment for adult and youth programs and ensures proper care, operation and maintenance of such equipment and supplies
Prepares and submits budget requests and monitors all budget expenditures within the adult and youth programs
Maintains current American Red Cross LGT, O2 administration, AED, CPR and first aid certifications

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of adult and youth program planning, development and teaching, and safety requirements
Knowledge of pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes and requirements
Extensive knowledge and understanding of adult and youth trends
Considerable knowledge and proficiency with use of desktop software applications including Microsoft Office, Powerpoint, Publisher and other social media applications
Considerable knowledge of equipment and programs used in a recreation facility
Ability to exercise considerable initiative and sound judgement; plan, organize, assign and review the work of subordinate staff; and efficiently supervise and schedule recreation staff and activities
Ability to supervise employees according to established policies and procedures in a positive and professional manner
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely verbally and in writing
Ability to work well with varied and culturally diverse people; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, public and other agencies; and effectively motivate, develop and discipline staff
Ability to communicate openly and effectively with supervisors, co-workers, staff, participants, parents and the public in order to provide excellent customer service in a timely manner
Ability to model appropriate behavior for participants and staff at all times
Ability to make quick decisions and resolve conflict in a diplomatic manner
Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds
Skill in operation of personal computer and applicable software, calculator, copy and fax machine, telephone and various sports equipment used in recreation programs
Skill in understanding and responding to customer needs
Education And Experience A Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation, Physical Education preferred and two (2) years of progressive experience in recreation planning, includes initiating and supervising adult and youth programs. Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence of the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Current certifications in the following: LGT, CPR, AED and O2 administration or the ability to acquire within one month of hire. Current WSI certification, or the ability to acquire within three months of hire. Employment is contingent upon successfully passing a pre-employment drug and alcohol test and may be subject to random, unannounced drug and alcohol testing as outline in the Town’s Drug & Alcohol Policy.
