Job Description

Community Hospital located in southern coastl Maine is seeking an additional Emergency Room RN. Full Time, 36hrs/wk. Variable shifts. Ideal candidate will have ED experience.



  1. General Summary

The Emergent Care Staff Nurse is a professional Registered Nurse who is accountable for the delivery of patient care. This includes assessing, coordinating and participating in total care and teaching for a specific patient population. Care is delivered in collaboration with the patient and family members, physicians, peers and other members of the health care team. The staff nurse sets the example for maintaining standards for the professional nursing practice in the clinical setting.



  1. Principle Responsibilities and Duties

Staff RNs in Emergent Care treat patients of all age groups and are knowledgeable about developmental needs over the age span, and, where appropriate, incorporate findings into individualized care planning and are knowledgeable about age related equipment.


Staff RNs in Emergent Care maintain the standards of patient care/protocols and implement the Policies and Procedures of the Hospital and within the scope of the Maine Nurse Practice Act, ANA Code of Ethics, ENA Standard of Care and Hospital Scope of Practice.


Staff RNs in Emergent Care understand the function in the collaborative practice model.


a) Communicate effectively with physicians, members of the interdisciplinary health care team, patients and families to assess, develop and carry out the comprehensive health plan.


b) Work with physicians to develop and carry out the medical plan of care.


c) Assist peers in the delivery of patient care and act as resources when professional nursing skills and judgment are needed.


Staff RNs in Emergent Care provide comprehensive patient care:


a) By assessing the patient’s condition and related health care needs.


b) By assessing, initiating and/or assisting with emergency measures for apparent or sudden averse developments in the patient’s condition.


c) By developing a teaching plan for the patient and appropriate family members, and by reviewing the LOGICARE discharge instructions with the same.


d) By administering medications and treatments in a timely manner and according to the plan.


e) By updating physician(s)/other nurses about changes in the patient’s condition.


f) By using time and resources in an efficient way.


g) By promoting and utilizing good practices in infection control.


h) By acting as a patient and family advocate.


Staff RNs in Emergent Care/WUC participate actively for improvement of nursing practice and professional development by:


a) Attending and participating in staff meetings/committees or other ER/WUC based activities.


b) Establishing and pursuing individual professional goals.


c) Participating in the professional development of peers, i.e. orientation of new staff.


d) Acting as a professional role model in all aspects of performance.


e) Supporting and upholding the highest level of intra-staff communication and support so that there is not an atmosphere of intra-staff break down, dissolution or shift/differences.


f) Participating in all aspects of quality care and the evaluation of care through chart audits, peer reviews, staff surveys, patient call-backs and other related performance improvement projects.
