DESCRIPTION

HOW DO YOU BECOME A RESERVE (VOLUNTEER) DEPUTY?
 

No prior police experience:  Successful completion of the testing and selection components and acceptance for sponsorship by the Lane County Sheriff's Office for attendance at a recognized Reserve Training Academy.

Previous completion of academy:  Previous completion of a state certified police reserve academy, between 0-2 years active police field or corrections experience (paid and/or reserve) and successful completion of the testing and selection components.

Prior police experience:  Within the last 5 years, a minimum of 2 years active police field services or corrections experience (paid and/or reserve), with completion of a state certified police reserve academy preferred, and successful completion of the testing and selection components.
 

 ORPAT testing dates to be determined.


Schedule: Must be able to work a variety of shifts, including but not limited to days, swing and graveyard; work any day of the week, including but not limited to weekends and holidays.

QUALIFICATIONS

Provide volunteer law enforcement services of a temporary nature under the supervision and control of regular employees of the Sheriff's Office.  A Reserve Deputy is sworn and possesses full Deputy authority.  The purpose is to provide the Department with sworn volunteers, trained to support its members in their respective duties.  While on duty, a Reserve Deputy will have the authority and responsibility to act as a regular Deputy Sheriff.  A Reserve Deputy will normally work with a regular Deputy Sheriff.  A Reserve Deputy may also be assigned other duties for which they are deemed qualified and for which a need exists.

CLASSIFICATION DETAILS

All candidates must successfully complete the following testing and selection components: (1) pre-employment background check, examinations, including physical abilities testing, written exam, and interview; (2) thorough background investigation, including criminal records check; (3) physical examination, including a drug screen, hearing and vision testing; and (4) psychological testing.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

Education: 
Equivalent to the completion of the 12th grade.  Two years of college is preferred.

Experience: 
Must have two years experience in dealing with the public.

Substitution:
An equivalent combination of experience and training, demonstrating the required knowledge and abilities, is qualifying.

Volunteer Employment for Reserve Deputy Sheriff is contingent upon successful completion of:
• Physical Abilities Test:  The Oregon Physical Abilities Test (ORPAT) will be administered.  Visit www.oregon.gov/DPSST/AT/ORPAT.shtml to review the physical abilities description, preparing for ORPAT, and to view a video of the test. You must pass the physical abilities test in order to be eligible to take the written examination. 
• Written Examination:  Assesses memory and understanding oral/written information; reading comprehension; numerical calculations and written communication skills.  You must pass the written examination in order to continue to the interview process.
• Pre-Employment background check
• Interview:  All eligible candidates will be contacted by phone to schedule a date and time for an interview.  You must pass the interview in order to continue in the hiring process.
• Background Investigation:  A thorough background investigation will be conducted which will include a psychological examination, an evaluation with a psychologist, and a medical examination with a drug screen and TB test.  You must pass the background investigation in order to continue in the hiring process.

Lane County Sheriff's Office examples of minimum standards and disqualifying factors:
The following are minimum standards and examples that may cause your rejection for consideration as an applicant with the Lane County Sheriff's Office:
 This list is not all inclusive but only covers some typical examples:
• Must be 21 years of age by the date of appointment
• Must be a U.S. Citizen.
• Must be a high school graduate or have successfully passed G.E.D. equivalency test.
• Must have valid Oregon Driver's License at time of appointment.
• Application and background information must be furnished completely, accurately, legibly, truthfully without deception, gross error or pertinent omissions.
• Applicants convicted of felony crimes will not be considered to advance further in the process.
• Conviction of DUII within last three years.
• Conviction of some misdemeanor crimes may be cause for rejection.
• Conviction of domestic violence.
• Multiple arrests without conviction.
• Multiple traffic accidents.
• Multiple traffic violations (for example: three moving violations in the last twelve months may cause rejection).
• Conviction of major traffic crimes within last three years.
• Multiple bankruptcies or repeated failure to pay just debts.
• History of habitual use of alcohol without proven rehabilitation, including driving under the influence.
• History of drug sales or of drug use, including marijuana, methamphetamine, LSD, etc., without proof of satisfactory rehabilitation.
• History of mental, psychological or personality disorders, to include threats of self-destruction or suicide.
• History indicating a propensity for violence, assault or inability to control one's temper and anger even under provoking circumstances.
• History of physical or sexual abuse to family members.
• History of multiple involvements in neighborhood disputes.
• History of association with known criminals other than family members.
• Any statement written or spoken that is verified to be untruthful.
• Termination for cause or termination during probationary period from previous law enforcement or criminal justice employment.
• History of any conduct that could reasonably be concluded would adversely affect the veracity, credibility, and/or ability to reach sound decisions and use good judgment in performance of duties.
• History of injury or disability that may hinder ability to perform duties of a Reserve Deputy Sheriff when reasonable accommodation cannot be made.
• A personal history that would bring disrepute, embarrassment, or lack of public support to the Lane County Sheriff's Office, if appointed.
• Violation of department policies and/or procedures, rules and regulations after appointment to position.
• Record over the past three years of excessive absenteeism or tardiness during your employment.
• A history of job instability reflected by multiple changes in jobs and/or occupation over the past three years.
• Failure to successfully complete or pass any portion of the selection process for this position, to include a no-hire recommendation by the department's psychologist or psychiatrist.
• Dishonorable discharge from military service for any of the reasons stated here.

Any applicant who is disqualified during our background process will not be considered for any position within the Lane County Sheriff's Office for a period of two years from the disqualification date.
 
Rejection for employment with our department does not preclude an applicant from applying for another position of employment with Lane County.
