POSITION SUMMARY:
The Educational/Cultural Coordinator of Native American Education Program is responsible for the overall management of program activities. This includes working with district staff, parents, and students in achieving the goals outlined in the district's Closing the Gap document. This individual must collaborate positively with staff and parents to improve Native American student educational outcomes and program effectiveness.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive.   • Identify Native American students and facilitate qualifying students to participate in the Title VII Program.Identify At-Risk Native American students; coordinate the process of assessment in cooperation with teachers, counselors, office staff, resource specialist, building teams, etc.Work collaboratively, with district LAP, Title I, and reading specialists to effectively utilize all resources and expertise toward positive outcomes for Native American students.Develop relationships with students to build students' confidence, develop pride in their tribal heritage, and address areas of challenge (i.e. stereotyping, racism, etc.)Develop relationships, make connections and build rapport the Native American families to bridge the gap between families and the educational learning environment.Maintain ongoing student progress records and provide student data for midyear and other DOE reporting requirements.Participate in relevant staff development opportunities to improve skills.Collaborate positively with colleagues and other FWPS staff to improve student outcomes, program effectiveness and overall team environment.Coordinates with school district family services staff, childcare providers and AI/AN community references for the identification and collaboration of services to AI/AN young children and their families.Coordinate with teaching staff for the infusion of culturally related learning activities into the classroom and research designed early childhood education curriculum.Delivers effective service to AI/AN parents and primary care providers in support of children's learning goals and objectives.Provides parent education and cultural programs for parents and staff.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist and cooperate with school personnel in promoting multicultural awareness.Maintains and reports on files and records of assigned students, including 506 forms for each student.
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience
BA degree in related field
Two years (2) experience managing programs or activities involving children

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Experience working in Native American Education programs
Experience in budgeting
May require some evening and/or weekend work
Requires travel around the region

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION:
Valid Washington State Administrative and/or Teaching Certificate

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:
Valid Washington State Driver's License and 5 year driving abstract
Criminal background clearance
Current First Aid/CPR certification

KNOWLEDGE OF:
Programs/initiatives/research in the areas of Closing the Achievement Gap and Developing Cultural Competency
Program budgeting and state reporting
Educational systems

ABILITY TO:
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse staff, students, and community
Skilled in working with adult learners
Skilled in verbal and written communication
Demonstrated flexibility in collaboration and cooperation working in a team structure
Demonstrated ability to conduct staff development
Understand how to analyze data as an informational source for improving student achievement
Experience with conflict resolution and mediation

This position also requires sitting, standing, walking, carrying, lifting, driving, filing, hearing, speaking, writing, keyboarding, extended periods of time reading off of a computer monitor. The employee is required to constantly lift up to 10 lbs; frequently lift up to 25 lbs; and occasionally lift up to 35 lbs. Weights over 35 lbs should be lifted with help from another person. This position will occasionally push/pull up to 200 lbs.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Experiences task interruptions; required to work outdoors in inclement weather; subjected to flexible shifts or alternating shifts; subject to dealing with distraught, angry and potentially dangerous people; sometimes required to work alone with no backup.

This position reports to and is evaluated by the Deputy Superintendent
