Physician Extender - Physician Assistant (PA) / Nurse Practitioner (NP) Job Overview:

Physician Assistant (PA)

  • Responsible for a regularly appointed clinic, compatible with workload and, in addition, provide immediate evaluation and management of emergent problems as they occur.
  • Capability to: collect and record, in proper format, medical and social historical data appropriate to the patient's condition.
  • Perform a general physical examination.
  • May become the primary care manager for a panel of patients. As a PCM, will be the primary person responsible for the management of the health and wellness of assigned patients.
  • Duties include: examination of patients, formulation differential diagnostic plans, defines and orders required diagnostic testing, interpretation of examination findings and test results, and implementation of treatment plans, determines need for consultation and assists in medical care and treatment provided at the direction of other specialists, approving/disapproving subspecialty referrals, answering patient telephone consults with the assistance of clinic staff, and providing primary and secondary preventive maintenance care.
  • Admit inpatients as per the local MTF instructions.
  • Recognize those more complicated cases, initiate treatment (if appropriate), and refer to a higher level of medical expertise for diagnosis and/or treatment.
  • Plan and initiate proper treatment within defined privileges and the scope of practice of the facility.
  • Identify and report those situations and individual cases which have public health significance and carry out effective control measures.
  • Clearly communicate to other health personnel either orally or in writing the findings, diagnosis and planned treatment regimen.
  • Stabilize and manage a patient in a medical or surgical emergency and/or transfer to physician care.
  • Determine appropriate means of evacuation of emergency patients, prepare patients for evacuation, and arrange for evacuation support.
  • Perform the following blocks: Digital, Local Infiltration, and Intercostal.
  • Perform urological procedures.
  • Maintain inpatient and outpatient medical records in accordance with MTF procedures.
  • Conduct in-person and telephonic deployment and mental health related assessments.

Nurse Practitioner (NP)

  • Skill in setting up, operating and monitoring specialized medical equipment such as IV infusion pumps, cardiac monitoring devices, EKG units, oxygen analyzers, nebulizers, and other unit specific equipment.
  • Provide a full range of nurse practitioner services
  • Supervise and provide general screening and medical care and examinations of patients for routine, acute and chronic conditions involving any and all organ systems.
  • Provide immunizations; diagnose, treat, and counsel patients
  • Treat patients with common acute conditions, illnesses, or minor trauma within accepted protocols, Nurse Practice Acts, and/or in collaboration with a physician.
  • Collaborate with the physician in the health care of patients with chronic illnesses.
  • Request consultation or referral with appropriate physicians, clinics, or other health resources as indicated.
  • Order diagnostic tests as applicable.
  • Prescribe and dispense medications as delineated by the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
  • Promote preventive and health maintenance care, including annual physicals, positive health behaviors, and self-care skills through education and counseling.
  • Coordinates patient care through a continuum and facilitates the achievement of optimal outcomes in relation to care, quality and cost effectiveness.
    Ensures compliance with standards of care and practice in accordance with all established policies, procedures, and guidelines used in the medical treatment facility.
  • Provides care within ethical and legal boundaries.
  • Assesses patients.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with a diverse group of people for the purpose of informing the healthcare team of plans/actions, for teaching/education to benefit the patient/family and organization.
  • Effectively uses appropriate communication format in addressing professional issues.
  • Ability to recognize adverse signs and symptoms and react quickly in emergency situations.

Physician Extender - Physician Assistant (PA) / Nurse Practitioner (NP) Job Qualifications:

Nurse Practitioner (NP)

  • BLS
  • Computer competency
  • Masters, Post-Graduate or Doctoral Degree accredited by CCNE
  • Nurse Practitioner Certification by ANCC or AANP
  • RN Licensure: active, unrestricted. Any U.S. state.
  • Experience: 2 years within the past 3 years

Physician Assistant (PA)

  • BLS
  • Computer competency
  • Physician Assistant Training Program accredited by ARC-PA
  • Board Certification: National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
  • Experience: 2 years within the past 3 years as a licensed P.A.
  • PA Licensure: active, unrestricted. Any U.S. state.
