EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I -

Landfill Wolcott, Colorado Fulltime Year-Round- Benefits Eligible $16.98-21.23/hour Maintains & operates light/heavy equipment for the operation of County's landfill specific to established solid waste landfilling practices. One year experience operating construction equipment or any equivalent combination of training and experience required. Valid Class "B" Colorado Commercial Driver's License or ability to obtain one within 1 year of hire date required. Applicant may be required to perform an equipment skills test before an offer of employment is made. 

Description

Maintains and operates light and heavy equipment used in the daily operation of the county's landfill specific to established municipal solid waste landfilling practices. 

NOTE: Incumbent/applicant may be required to perform an equipment skills test before an offer of employment is made.

This position is scheduled for Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
 
 

Example of Duties

 

  • Operates heavy equipment for facility construction projects as well as, manage waste at the working face including pushing, separating, spreading, compacting and covering of trash, landfill road construction, leachate management, light snow plowing, and hydro seeding. 
  • Monitors the working area for hazardous materials when compacting trash, directs traffic at the working face during daily business and relays load types to the scale attendant. 
  • Clean, service and make minor repairs to assigned equipment including complete walk around inspection checking for leaks, broken parts, and correct fluid levels; reports equipment problems to supervisor. 
  • Demonstrate continuous effort to improve knowledge, skills, and abilities in regards to landfill equipment operation. 
  • Ensure compliance with departmental policies, procedures, and safety practices. 
  • Keep in constant communication with the landfill Crew Leader and Solid Waste and Recycling Manager. 
  • Maintain storm water control best practices to include but not limited to ditches, culverts, outfalls, drainages, etc. 
  • May perform manual labor associated with daily and equipment operations.
  • May be required to respond to duty calls during off-hours if contacted by the county.
  • Operates: Motor Grader, Bulldozer, Water Truck, Excavator, Scraper, Trash Compactor, Off-Road Haul Truck, Hydro Seeder, Front End Loader, Multi-use Hook Truck, and Fork Lift. 
  • Performs other related duties as required.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Education: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Minimum Experience: 

  • One (1) year experience operating construction equipment or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities; or, any combination of education and experience that produces the required knowledge, skills and abilities

 
Licenses and Certifications:
 

  • Valid Class B Colorado Commercial Driver's License or ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment.
  • Satisfactory motor vehicle record.
  • Solid Waste Association of North America MOLO certification or ability to obtain within first two (2) years of employment.   

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Machinery, equipment, repairs, and procedures used in landfill or construction work.
  • Operation of Machinery and equipment associated with landfill or construction work.
  • Matching equipment operation to situation.
  • Basic computer skills
  • Read, understand, and follow written and verbal instruction in order to operate machinery and other equipment.
  • Learn to use machinery or equipment in order to perform more advanced tasks, e.g., operating fluorescent bulb crusher, hydro-seeding, building fence.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to be courteous of fellow employees, citizens, and businesses while performing job duties.
  • Concentrate and pay close attention to detail, e.g., identifying hazardous materials which may have been discarded.
  • Lift and carry moderately heavy materials, supplies, and equipment (25-50 lbs.) frequently. Lift heavy materials, supplies and equipment (50-100 lbs.) occasionally.
  • Work requires continues, walking, stooping, standing, and climbing.
  • Use of tools and equipment requiring high degree of dexterity.

 Work Environment:

  • Frequent exposure to dirt, dust, extremes of temperature, and noxious fumes and odors; potential exposure to hazardous materials; exposed to hazards associated with equipment, machinery, and ungraded terrain at constructions sites and close proximity to moving vehicles.
  • May spend a small amount of time in landfill office operating truck scale.
