Job Description
The Des Moines Art Center seeks a hands-on, collaborative, and highly visible Director of Security to protect and secure the Art Center’s collection. This position leads a team of a highly responsive and service oriented security officers who safeguard the museum’s artwork while simultaneously creating a safe, pleasant, and welcoming experience for all visitors and colleagues. The Director of Security innovates to make the Des Moines Art Center’s security team world class through robust security operations, communication, planning and strong leadership.
Essential Functions
Collaborates with museum colleagues to evaluate existing and introduce new safety and security policies and procedures; implements those policies and procedures as necessary to attain full compliance with Suggested Guidelines for Museum Security as adopted by the American Alliance of Museums.
Recruits, trains and supervises a team of more than 20 full- and part-time service oriented security staff.
Develops and implements ongoing training with an emphasis on visitor service, advanced security standards, and emergency protocol.
Works closely with the events team, Director of Events, Community Events and Rentals Manager and Membership Manager for Security staffing of all events, including those after operating hours.
Fosters an environment of continued learning and visitor engagement through collaboration with other departments including but not limited to Curatorial, Visitor Engagement and Education.
Oversees the smooth operation of all electronic, computerized, integrated security/fire/CCTV systems, and provides appropriate levels of training for staff.
Prepares, maintains and evaluates the security department operating budget.Works closely with the Director of Finance and Operations to ensure staffing budget remains on track during the fiscal year.
Works closely with the Environmental Services Director to report on observable building conditions and to maintain secure and safe building structure.
This position is on call and will respond to the museum as required or render guidance 24 hours/7 days a week/365 days a year. Incumbent will be expected to work regularly on weekends and additional hours as needed.

Acts in ways that reflect favorably on the Art Center and maintains professional standards in the quality of performance and demonstration of concern for the Art Center’s collection, programs, and facilities. Adheres to Des Moines Art Center Code of Ethics, Employee Handbook and other organizational policies.
Qualifications (work experience, education, certification) including KSAOs
Excellent customer and visitor service skills.
Strong leadership, interpersonal, planning and organizational skills
Excellent written and oral communication skills; training, presentation, negotiation, problem solving, and conflict resolution skills.
Thorough working knowledge of integrated security / fire systems and related technology.
Des Moines residence highly desirable
Skilled in the use of Microsoft Office:Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint; cloud-based scheduling system
Bachelor’s Degree in a Management or Security related field
8-10 years’ progressive management experience preferred
Security experience in a museum, historic property, cultural, or hospitality setting highly desired
Proven record of managing a large, diverse operation
Decision Making
Regularly exercises judgement and discretion in significant matters related to the protection of the Art Center’s students, visitors, personnel, artworks and physical building.
Reporting/Contacts
This position reports to the Senior Director of Finance and Operations and has frequent contact, communication and meetings with colleagues in Installation, Registration, Education, Events and Membership departments.
Responsible for supervising Dock Operations Manager, Security Supervisors, Security Operations Support Officer, Security Training Officers, and Security Officers
Special Considerations (Work Environment, Schedule, Required Travel, etc.)
Most often, work is inside, in a climate-controlled environment with light background noise.
Shift times may vary to meet the museum’s requirement to staff the facilities at all hours.Work may require long periods of sustained standing.
