SCOPE
The teacher is responsible for the intellectual, social and effective development of students.
The teacher will also insure that all programs, materials and practices within the classroom are free from gender and minority bias and discrimination, and are in keeping with the letter and spirit of Title IX and Affirmative Action policies adopted by the Board of Education.
The teacher is directly responsible to the Principal of the school, and is evaluated/supervised by the administrator as designated in the Staff Evaluation Booklet. This evaluation is based upon basic tenets of good teaching which are found in each teacher's respective job description and the Connecticut Teaching Competencies.

EXAMPLES OF RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Review available medical/audiological information pertaining to the student's performance and probable use of hearing; obtaining updated medical/audiological information and share with parent, teacher, and other appropriate staff
  • Communicate with Consultant and Diagnostic staff as appropriate
  • Monitor the condition and use of appropriate amplification equipment for each student
  • Provide instruction to each hearing impaired student on the class list, as appropriate
  • Develop lesson plans for implementing instruction
  • Make regular contact with parents of students and keep records of contacts, including updating short range objectives and other appropriate records
  • Provide emotional support for students and families to promote understanding and coping skills for children's hearing loss
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills in the areas of language development and language refinement needed by hearing impaired children
  • Demonstrate skills necessary to communicate effectively and to provide a complete English model for hearing impaired children using a Total Communication approach
  • Demonstrate knowledge and ability to implement the following specialized areas: auditory training speech and speech reading monitoring amplification use and maintenance of hearing aids use of interpreter Total Communication
  • Establish open, frequent communication with parents, staff, and related services personnel.
  • Maintain schedule, be punctual, and meet assigned responsibilities
  • Establish and maintain a positive atmosphere in working with staff in order that this atmosphere may be carried over for the hearing impaired student
  • Use good organizational skills and flexibility to establish appropriate schedules for student and self
  • Teach ASL 1 course at the high school level as an introductory course for students learning to sign.
  • Additional job responsibilities as designated by the supervisors
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must possess or be eligible for Connecticut Hearing Impaired certification (057).
  • Must produce evidence of meeting No Child Left Behind (NCLB) requirements, as applicable.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to deliver content.
  • Ability to relate successfully with staff, families and students from diverse backgrounds, experiences and skill levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement differentiated instruction and build upon the strengths and challenges of a multi-cultural and multi-racial classroom/district.
