How to Decide Between Two Job Offers

For every college graduate or experienced hire looking for a new position, the job search can be a daunting task. It often entails sending out dozens of resumes, networking with anyone and everyone you possibly can, and spending countless hours in interviews.

With the main focus of getting a job, applicants can sometimes be overwhelmed when they receive multiple offers. When this is the case, the focus suddenly switches from finding any job to picking the right one. Sometimes this is easy and one job offer clearly is more attractive than the others. Other times, the decision is much more complicated.

Now what?

For those lucky enough to receive multiple attractive offers from their job search, choosing between two positions can be tenuous. In this situation, it is important to assess what your near and long-term goals are. Which job best fits with your professional and personal goals? Does one job require travel that will take away from time with your family? Or does a job with a smaller company have limited opportunities for advancement? All of these are important questions to consider.

Sometimes jobs are very similar in nature and at similarly sized companies. In that case, it may be beneficial to consider the cultural fit at each company. Which interviewers did you get a better vibe from? Remember, these are the people that you are going to be spending a large portion of your day with, so it makes it a lot easier if you get along with your co-workers and relate to them personally.

Companies also have different benefits and perks that can make a big difference depending on your situation. For those looking to start a family, maternity leave policies or flexible work arrangements may be a key component of a benefits package. For others, types of 401(k) plans or pension benefits may be a differentiating factor.

No two jobs are the same and no two individuals are the same. In a job search, having to choose between two great offers is an enviable position to be in. However, there isn’t always a “right” choice. This varies by person and the most important thing is gather as much pertinent information as possible, weighing each job offer and then choosing the job that will best fit with your personal and professional goals
