What Is a Project Estimator?
A project estimator is a construction or manufacturing professional who estimates the total cost for projects, considering each step, the work and materials involved, and time needed. Their duties include meeting with the client and construction team, determining the steps in the project process, and analyzing plans and data to form an estimate of cost and time. They may travel to work with various clients or view building sites. This job is a management position.
How to Become a Project Estimator
Most project estimators have a bachelor’s degree in a field such as construction management or building science. You can also gain experience in entry-level construction or manufacturing roles, which will help you learn skills you need to be successful in this career. While it is not required, The Association for the Advancement of Cost Engineering (AACE) and The American Society of Professional Estimators (ASPE) both offer professional certifications. Some estimators also choose to pursue a master’s degree in a construction-related field.
