What Is a Physician and How to Become One

Physicians examine, diagnose, and treat patients, often with injuries and illnesses. They meet with patients, record medical histories, conduct routine physical exams, prescribe medications, and run diagnostic tests to determine a patient’s health status. Physicians also provide guidance to their patients on aspects of a healthy lifestyle, like diet, exercise, and hygiene. Physicians may direct other medical staff and train new physicians, educating them in the field.

Physicians will do some types of surgery, depending on their training and specialty. Many physicians perform small routine procedures in-office and refer patients to specialists for more complex conditions and operations.

As defined by the American Academy of PAs, a physician assistant is a nationally certified and state-licensed medical professional who works with a physician, health care team, or independently to manage patient health care. PAs are not required to have the same level of training as physicians, but they are able to perform many of the same routine tasks in a medical setting.

Education and training requirements to become a physician are among the most demanding of any occupation. Physicians are required to earn their bachelor’s and medical degrees. After medical school, they must complete a minimum of three years in an internship and residency program. Depending on the healthcare specialty, physicians may have to fulfill an additional residency requirement before being qualified to practice on their own.

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly-skilled, experienced physician to join our growing healthcare team. You will diagnose and counsel patients on their current medical condition, set up an effective treatment plan, educate patients on preventative health measures, and perform annual physicals. A compassionate personality and exemplary bedside manner are a must.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Meet with patients to assess their symptoms; inquire into the nature of their illness or injury
• Accurately identify and diagnose medical conditions
• Thoroughly examine patients and attend to their chief complaint
• Answer and advise on any other questions or concerns the patient might have
• Assign appropriate treatment plan according to each patient's needs
• Educate and inform patient of necessary treatment plan and any follow-up appointments
• Perform clinical tests to better inform diagnosis
• Perform in-office treatment if possible
• Look for anything unusual or abnormal
• Prescribe appropriate medicines or therapy
• Calculate correct medication dosage for each patient and educate on proper use
• Order outside diagnostic tests and lab work as needed (blood/urine test, tissue samples, imagery, etc.)
• Analyze and share results of diagnostic testing with patient
• Continually chart and maintain patient information on paper and in computer system
• Conduct follow-ups with patients to monitor and track their condition and progress
• Refer patient to a medical specialist when needed
• Maintain confidentiality and always work with respect and integrity
• Encourage preventative health measures including proper diet, rest and exercise
• Direct, train, and supervise medical staff including nurses, physician assistants, and med techs on proper procedures and protocol
• Attend conferences and continue research in your field to stay abreast of medical innovations and breakthroughs

Requirements and Qualifications

• Doctorate in Medicine (M.D. or D.O.)
• Valid license to practice; board certified
• 2+ years practicing medicine in hospital or private practice
• Adept at diagnosing problems and creating treatment plans for patients
• Highly computer literate and familiar with charting
• Excels in communicating sensitive and/or adverse information
• Sound judgment and expert decision-making abilities
• Analytical thinker and complex problem-solver
