In the petroleum industry, gas engineers, also known as petroleum engineers, work out in the field to help identify new gas well locations and design the most efficient way to extract gas from underground. A gas engineer often spends time on geographic surveys, assessing the stability of the land and whether or not it is appropriate for drilling. The job requires involvement in every aspect of the process, from ordering pumps and equipment to installing the pipes and extraction tools. When not in the field, duties include assessing rocks, performing site trials, and designing ways to improve the efficiency of drilling and pipeline technology.

How Do You Become a Gas Engineer?

To become a gas engineer, earn a bachelor’s degree in engineering, geology, or a related field. Acquire an entry-level position or an internship with a gas petroleum engineering firm to gain experience in the industry. All gas engineers need to be licensed. State license requirements vary, so research the qualifications needed in your state. Earning certification, such as the Certified Petroleum Engineer designation offered by The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) may make you a more valuable candidate in the job market. Essential skills to have include a strong foundation in mathematics and the ability to think creatively and solve complex engineering and design problems.
