What Is an Anesthesiologist Assistant and How to Become One

Anesthesiologist Assistant

What Does an Anesthesiologist Assistant Do?

Anesthesiologist assistants work with licensed anesthesiologists to provide anesthesia care to surgery patients. Your job starts with pre-surgery tasks including calibrating the anesthesia delivery systems and monitors, taking your patient’s health history, and performing a physical exam to inform the anesthesia care plan. You will collaborate with a licensed anesthesiologist to create your patient’s anesthesia care plan, and work with other members of the anesthesia care team to implement the plan—preparing the patient for surgery, administering anesthesia medicine, and monitoring levels to ensure the patient’s safety during and after surgery.

How to Become an Anesthesiologist Assistant

To become an anesthesiologist assistant, you need a master’s degree in anesthesiology. As part of your education, you will participate in clinical training and get hands-on opportunities to learn the duties of an anesthesiologist assistant. You can supplement your qualifications with an optional certification from the National Commission for Certification of Anesthesiologist Assistants (NCCAA).

Where Can Anesthesiologist Assistants Practice?

As an anesthesiologist assistant, you can find jobs in hospitals, trauma centers, and outpatient surgery centers where you’ll work closely with licensed anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists, and other members of the anesthesia care team. Some employers require CPR and life support certification. You’ll work shifts up to 12 hours, so you need the stamina to be on your feet for extended periods. Problem-solving skills, communication skills, and teamwork are vital to a career as a medical professional. Your medical knowledge and attention to detail will help ensure your patients’ safety before, during, and after surgery.
