Job Summary
This is a 100% remote role.

The Applications Engineer is a senior level position considered to be a prime administrator and operator of all the specific applications that are used in IT. The Engineer needs to be extremely knowledgeable about the inner workings of all the applications for which they are a prime administrator, as well as communicating that knowledge to the other team members of the applications team. You will be expected to communicate closely with cross functional teams as necessary to ensure that applications are functional, usable, and reliable for use by the entire company. The Engineer who will fill this role will be responsible for the design, development, testing, and deployment of products that help Ziply deliver world class internet. Behind the scenes at Ziply, the Engineer will help deliver systems that enable the business to be successful. You will work with a telecom company that is reinventing itself to delight our customers by becoming more modern and efficient from the inside out!

Job Duties:
  • Maintain and operate applications of which you are a prime administrator and operator and become the Subject Matter Expert on those applications
  • Communicate issues to vendors for out of the box applications and form a functional plan to troubleshoot and implement fixes
  • Document and inventory the status quo of integrated applications including external system calls of applications
  • Write “how to” documentation for operating and administering applications
  • Communicate changes and recommendations to improve efficiency in applications and systems
  • Create MOPs and execute changes within the production environments
  • Identify dependencies between applications and OS level packages and troubleshoot problems with those interconnections
  • Work with cross functional groups and organizations to develop tools and solutions from use cases and requirement documents
  • Perform other duties as required to support the business and evolving organization
  • Mentor and train lower tier engineers to increase their technical ability and experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Business Management or related field
  • 5+ years of engineering and application experience working with development teams and system administration teams
  • 3+ years of work experience in a large, geographically distributed server architecture
  • 3+ years of experience working with development teams for functional requirements on distributed server systems running internally developed applications
  • 3+ years of experience working for large telecommunications companies
  • 3+ years of networking experience with focus on server interconnections
  • Experience with large scale software upgrades and versioning changes across multiple servers
  • In depth knowledge of service provider systems, applications, and processes for IT organizations
  • In depth knowledge of service provider products, services, and offerings for commercial and residential services
  • Ability to automate repetitive engineering tasks
  • Familiarity with SOA and Microservice software design patterns
  • Development skills:
    o PHP
    o Java
    o Javascript
    o Python
    o NodeJs
  • Hands on application experience:
    o Deploying/configuring Nginx, Apache and core Linux subsystems like bind, iptables, etc.
    o Version control (eg Git/Gitlab, Github)
    o CI/CD (e.g. Jenkins, Travis, TeamCity or equivalent)
    o Docker containerization and clustering (Kubernetes/ECS)
    o Configuration management tools (e.g. Ansible, Puppet, Chef)
  • Knowledge of software life cycle management with emphasis on inception, defining processes, and developing technical business requirements
  • Experience with Agile (Scrum, Kanban) software delivery methodology
  • Ability to write Ops guides/MOPs/etc. as needed
  • Effectively communicate between non-technical people and deeply technical SME’s
  • Ability to communicate effectively across multiple large organizational structures
  • Driven to identify and provide effective solutions as needed
  • Must have the availability to be on call in a 24/7 server environment if required

Work Environment
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to computer screens and requires extensive use of a computer, keyboard, mouse, and multi-line telephone system. The work is primarily a modern office setting.
