Job Description
YR Media seeks an Audience Development Director; a position central to YR’s strategic goals and the first role of this type at our award-winning organization.

The ideal candidate has extensive digital marketing and social media experience, and a proven track record using data and analytics to set strategy and actionable growth plans in a content setting. YR Media produces a unique mix of news, opinion, documentary features, arts and culture commentary, social justice editorials, curated and original music, podcasts and more. Successful candidates for this role are digital strategists who can engage across these channels and who can help us distribute and promote both the brand as a whole as well our unique signature products.

Job Summary
The Audience Development Director is responsible for leading the audience acquisition and growth strategy for the YR Media brand; establishing KPIs and reporting rubrics, working in tandem with our content and creative leadership to set organization-wide content strategy, leading and managing paid and organic content marketing strategies, identifying and leading potential sponsorship and revenue generating opportunities, and managing a growing team of audience development staff and rotating interns.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Leads audience acquisition and growth strategy for YR Media multimedia content, including developing and implementing a strategy for distributing YR Media content across owned and partner platforms.
  • Establishes a set of KPIs around audience development for the YR Media editorial and music content, and a rubric for reporting and tracking these metrics organization-wide.
  • Sets a strategy for, builds out, and oversees an audience development team, inclusive of a social media strategist, partnerships and platform managers.
  • Leads and manages paid content marketing and advertising opportunities, including managing digital and PR agencies.
  • Work with the newsroom on audience engagement strategies pegged to specific stories.
  • Identifies strategic partnerships with brands and platforms that focus on the YR Media target audience (under 30), and on driving audiences to consume YR Media content.
  • Works in collaboration with the development team to identify potential social media and B2C strategies to increase brand awareness and engage current and future donors, sponsorships and revenue generating partnerships, and collaborate to develop a strong audience to membership funnel.
  • Support the organic growth of social media platforms using content strategies like A/B testing, algorithm research and social media metrics.
  • Provides strategic thought leadership.

In addition to these responsibilities, performs other activities as assigned and required.

Qualifications and Skills
  • Minimum 8-12 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a related field. Excellent written editing skills, including copy editing/writing and fact-checking
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with particular understanding of the voice and approach required for social media.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ease working within teams remotely or on-site.
  • Experience creating socially-driven or -conceived news and features
  • The ideal candidate has extensive digital marketing and social media experience, and a proven track record using data and analytics to set strategy and actionable growth plans in a content setting.
  • Experience in a media organization, a content-driven editorial setting, and with marketing content to the target age demographic (under 30).

This position supervises designated members of the Audience team, and may provide oversight to interns and contractors.

Location Requirements - Employee’s principal place of work shall be located in Oakland, CA or any of YR Media designated hubs around the country.

Physical Requirements: This position requires the ability to occasionally lift 25 pound boxes to a height of 3-4 feet.
