Ballad Health, based in Johnson City, TN, with over $2 billion in gross revenue and over 260 days cash on hand, is an integrated healthcare system that operates a family of 21 hospitals. This 2,506-bed acute care health system has over 14,000 employees, including 815 physicians, and has 77 percent of the market share in the primary service area that includes 1 million residents. The system’s primary competitors are outside of this service area.
This is an excellent opportunity for a strong tax leader with healthcare experience to demonstrate their expertise in providing strategic direction in leading and streamlining tax operations for the system.
The new Director reports to the SVP Financial Administration and will work closely with numerous other departments, including Finance, Accounting, Patient Accounting, Payroll, Reimbursement, Accounts Payable, Administration, Legal, Human Resources, IT and more. It’s essential that this professional has a broad, working knowledge of federal and state tax reporting, as well as general accounting experience for both profit & non-profit health organizations; including IRS Forms 990/990T. Four tax accountants will directly report to this position, so this individual should have experience working in a team environment.
Key responsibilities of the Corporate Tax Director:
* Preparing federal and state income tax returns including all related analyses
and supporting documentation
* Organizing and timely complying with IRS and state tax agency audits
* Oversight of required estimated tax payments and associated accounting for
tax liabilities, payments, and refunds
* Serving as departmental liaison with senior management and others within the
organization concerning tax matters
* Serving as primary liaison with the IRS, state tax agencies and external auditors
* Oversight of various departmental projects throughout the year, such as
the recovery of unclaimed property, annual estimation of the value of the
org's tax exemption, quarterly reporting of community benefit to the states of
Tennessee and Virginia, etc.
* Evaluating the impact of new tax guidance emerging from the IRS or state, and
sharing guidance with departments that have a need to know
* Establishing goals for the Tax Department and coordinating process improvement
sessions to enhance the department's operating efficiency and accuracy
* Providing ongoing education relative to community benefit
A minimum of eight year's finance experience in a large, full-service hospital is required, with at least five years of experience in a management role. The ideal candidate will have both general and patient financial experience. A bachelor's degree in Accounting is required, a master's degree is preferred. Experience with Microsoft Office and hospital software is necessary in order to compile data, produce meaningful reports, and investigate financial transactions. All candidates should have valid and active CPA licensure.

After including operating and non-operating results, Ballad Health ended the quarter with a net income of $66 million, compared to a net loss of $26.1 million in the same quarter during fiscal 2018. The system is investing nearly $200 million in capital for new equipment, diagnostic technology, building improvements, information technology infrastructure and a common electronic health record.
