TECHNOLOGY SERVICES DEPARTMENT

Our department delivers both technological services and collaborative, strategic thinking/implementation to the Whitman community. We organize ourselves into five interconnected teams: Client Services, Enterprise Technology, Technology Infrastructure, Instructional and Learning Technology, and Information Security. INSTRUCTIONAL & LEARNING TECHNOLOGY GROUP

As part of Technology Services, our group's "bread and butter" is working closely with faculty to help them enhance and/or augment their pedagogical and scholarly goals through the effective application of technology. We passionately pursue this broad spectrum of activities in everything from helping faculty with day-to-day computing to supporting long term projects; from technical support of events, to examining and piloting exciting new uses of technology.

POSITION PURPOSE

The Math & Statistics and Computer Science Technology Specialist will work with Math & Statistics and Computer Science faculty and Technology Services staff to develop and maintain a computing environment that supports the academic goals of the Math and Computer Sciences department(s). This position provides technology support to the faculty and students of the Math and Computer Science Departments/Programs and manages three departmental computer labs, including deployment of lab computer images, installation of software applications, hardware maintenance, and printing.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Manage the computer labs for the departments of Math & Statistics and Computer Science.
  • Support the technology needs of the faculty and students in the Math & Statistics and Computer Science Departments.
  • Install and configure software as needed on departmental computers.
  • Supervise departmental student employees.
  • Work with faculty to assess software applications that support their curriculum.
  • Provide input into the planning and budgeting for the Math & Statistics and Computer Science technology environment.
  • Work with Technology Services staff to integrate Math & Statistics and Computer Science systems with college-wide technology.
  • Collaborate with Technology Services staff on projects and operations, especially ones germane to Math & Statistics and Computer Science departments.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of and experience with command line tools.
  • Familiarity with programming and willingness to learn new programming languages and environments.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

The following attributes are not mandatory, but we hope for as many of these as possible in the ideal candidate.

Technological Experience in supporting and/or using:
  • Systems Administration in Windows and/or Linux.
  • Experience with a variety of programming/scripting languages, including bash or PowerShell.
  • Knowledge of Ubuntu Package Management System.
  • Experience using or supporting software development tools such as revision control.
  • Knowledge of math and statistics application packages such as Mathematica, R, and Stata.

Instruction and Learning
  • Experience supporting and using Learning Management Systems (e.g. Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle).
  • Experience supporting in-classroom technology, such as projectors.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in technology-related field.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Advanced degree in Math, Statistics, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Experience working in Higher Education.


HIRING SALARY RANGE

Successful applicants can expect to start between $55,800 and $61,000.
