Job Description

Performs Chemistry, Special Chemistry, Immunology and Serology testing using automated and manual techniques. Performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following:

1. Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.

2. Analyze blood, body fluids and urine specimens according to the established procedures of the Chemistry Department.

3. Evaluates test results for abnormalities and/or significant variations and confirms and/or corrects before releasing.

4. Notifies appropriate patient care areas of critical and STAT results

5. Performs and documents all routine preventive maintenance and basic trouble-shooting procedures on instrumentation.

6. Follows Chemistry department policies and protocols as applicable to specimen handling and processing.

7. Follows Chemistry department procedures as applicable to instrument calibration and evaluation of QC results.

8. Exhibits logical deductive processes when assessing test results.

9. Initiates appropriate interaction with supervisory staff and/or vendor technical support when necessary to troubleshoot.

10. Participates in external NYS and CAP proficiency testing, as well as internal proficiencies.

11. Participates in the evaluation of new products and procedures.

12. Assists with staff training.

13. Complies with all regulatory standards

14. Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • • B.S. degree in Clinical Technology or related science with one year of relevant hospital experience.
  • • ASCP or NCA certification preferred.
  • • Current NYS Clinical Technologist License or Licensure eligible required

Physical/Mental Demands/Requirements & Work Environment

  • May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital’s SDS (Safety Data Sheet) data base and may be accessed through the hospital’s Intranet site (Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy of the SDS data base can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc.
  • Must be able to remain stationary for extended/prolonged periods
  • Must be able to constantly operate computer, equipment and other devices
  • Position requires ability to concentrate on fine detail with interruptions and attend to tasks for more than sixty (60) minutes at a time.
