Overnight Veterinary Technician
Thursday, Friday, and Saturday 10:00 PM - 8:00 AM
SUMMARY: Overnight Veterinary Technicians will work to aid in the completion of the daily duties of the emergency department from triage, critical care nursing, and emergency surgery monitoring. Strong technical skills are required. Experience in CRI, telemetry, advanced catheter placement is strongly preferred. Duties will include but may not be limited to;
Admit patients into the hospital for emergency and out-patient procedures in accordance with hospital policies and procedures
Physical assessment of patients and monitoring all vitals
Prepare anesthesia protocols for each patient under the direction of the veterinarian and calculating all drugs
Administer injectable medications (subcutaneously, intra-muscularly and intravenously)
Placement and maintenance of IV catheters, knowledge of fluid therapy requirements/calculations and use of fluid pumps
Knowledge of use for surgical monitoring equipment (including ECG, capnography, pulse oximetry, oscillometric and Doppler blood pressure monitoring)
Endotracheal intubation/extubation and how to safely administer inhalant anesthesia
Ability to proficiently and closely monitor patient vitals in critical patients; notifying the attending doctor of even the most subtle changes, and recognize potential complications.
Have the ability to assess patient pain and work in conjunction with the veterinarian to provide appropriate pain management
Provide all patients with compassionate care and attend to all patients nursing needs as they arise
Proper documentation in all medical records and accurately log Controlled Drugs per DEA Requirements
Discharge patients under the veterinarian’s orders ensuring the patients are well groomed and in a medically appropriate state with the ability to explain all medications dispensed and home care instructions to owner in a clear and educational manner
Knowledge of common medications and their side effects including injectable and oral medications
Assist all areas of the hospital as needed including surgery and in-patient care with the ability to triage emergencies by quickly assessing the patient’s health status and collecting patient histories, perform diagnostic procedures under the direction of the veterinarian including radiology and laboratory procedures and provide hospitalized patients with all treatments as directed including basic animal husbandry and medical care
Conduct one’s self in a professional manner under all situations and maintain positive relationships with other employees, MUST be team oriented, MUST be able to communicate and work with team members in order to solve any issues that may arise in order to best serve our patients
