HVAC Controls Engineering Specialist/Programmer

We are currently seeking a Controls Installation Technician to join the team as a member of our growing Energy Services division in Texas.

PRIMARY FUNCTION: Utilizing computer-based tools, position delivers engineered design, programming, start-up and commissioning services for assigned jobs / projects and/or service delivery. Responsible for customer satisfaction, position redeems customer commitments in a professional, timely, high quality manner. Responsible for delivery of Owner / End-user training. Serves as technical resource to company. Provides training / guidance to Engineering, Installation and Service Specialists.

COMPETENCY AREAS
Technical Knowledge:


Thorough understanding of HVAC control systems (pneumatic / electric / electronic DDC) employed within commercial buildings.
Thorough understanding of field technical requirements related to the installation, start-up, commissioning and certification of building control systems.
Ability to read / interpret sales generated estimates, proposals and work scopes and/or plans and specifications issued by Architect / Consulting Engineers.
Ability to determine configuration and extent of existing control systems through physical ‘on-site’ inspection and examination of any related documentation.
Thorough understanding of control system software / hardware product application.
Ability to prepare engineered design control system drawings, equipment sequence of operations, related control system programming and graphics generation.
Keen ability to problem solve. Knows why a problem exists, knows the appropriate solution, and possesses the ability to effectively institute and/or communicate the solution.
Seeks help when faced with a seemingly unsolvable problem.


Planning / Scheduling:

Demonstrates ability to accurately prioritize and execute work assignments by:
o Coordinating daily / weekly with assigned Project Manager
o Reviewing and understanding all aspects of the work to be accomplished
o Insuring the availability / possession of proper tools / materials
o Executing assignments on-schedule
o Completion of assignments within the allotted hours for task
Maintains a schedule of all work assignments utilizing MS Outlook calendar
Tracks work progress and/or issues adversely affecting assignments, completion of work, etc.


Documentation:

Promptly and accurately completes all required paperwork daily / weekly as required.
Completes and submits detailed written summary of activity (Daily Log) and other related written reports (Commissioning Reports) required and/or necessary to fully describe all start-up, commissioning, certification activities (findings, corrective action taken, results, etc.).
Secures customer signature on all service tickets.


Communication: -

Pro-actively reports to assigned Project Manager in regular review meetings and/or more frequently (as circumstances require), any unfavorable news, changes made, disenchantment (for any reason) expressed by customers.
Communicates information to all parties who would benefit from it.


Training:
Belongs to and takes advantage of technical organizations to improve technical knowledge.
Searches out and reads applicable manuals. Keeps technical knowledge up to date regarding new products, techniques and concepts.
Demonstrates capability and interest in training others to improve skill sets. Recognizes what has to be taught and does so. Instills understanding in all levels of people, regardless of their technical knowledge.
Trains field technical personnel, subcontractors and other entities performing work regarding the requirements of building control system installation, start-up, commissioning and certification.
Educates others in the ability to solve problems without solving the problem for them.


Sales Assistance:
Provides estimating assistance to sales staff as requested. Assists in evaluation of sales estimate, plans and specifications to determine project requirements.
Participates in pre-bid reviews and sales to operations turnover meetings
Identifies chargeable opportunities (Change Orders)
Alerts sales personnel about competitive sales issues.


Project Completion and Acceptance:
Prepares closeout documentation. “As-built” drawings, O & M manuals, etc.
Prepares and obtains sign-in logs of customer attendance each day during customer training.
Upon completion of customer training, obtains customer acknowledgement of delivery of training obligation.
Participates in job site final walk-thru with assigned Project Manager, company service representative, Owner Representative, and Consulting Engineer.
In concert with administration staff, transfers excess materials and equipment appropriately.


Customer Care:
Determines who in the customer’s organization is responsible for the system.
Endeavors to maintain long-term customer confidence and satisfaction.
Informs customer when arriving at, or leaving the work site and when planning to return.
Responds to customer complaints with empathy and explores complaint to determine nature and extent of problem. Follows systematic questioning techniques. Immediately informs assigned Project Manager and/or Service Management of these issues.
Communicates tactfully and offers suggestions when the problem is caused by the customer’s use of the system (rather than a fault of the system). Instructs on proper operation.
Gives assurance to customer that the problem is fixed; explaining cause and remedy; and if problem has not been fixed, explains situation and suggests next step.
Avoids needless callbacks by checking complete system before leaving the job.


Business Relationships:
Builds rapport and productive working relationships with other managers, supervisors, co-workers, subcontractors, consultants, customers and third party entities with which the company conducts business.
Codes, Standards, and System Requirements: - IV
Understands local, state and federal codes and industry standards applicable to work.
Obtains permits and plan checks where necessary.
Special Projects: - III
Provides support for any special projects as assigned.
