The Organization
Mission: The nonprofit Virginia Public Access Project elevates public understanding of politics and government by organizing and presenting information in ways that are easily accessible and free of partisan bias.
VPAP is fiercely nonpartisan. It does not lobby or take positions on issues. The singular focus is to give Virginians information they need to make their own decisions.
VPAP’s approach is grounded in verifiable facts drawn directly from government databases. It presents this data in easy-to-understand formats. VPAP is a source of reliable information for professionals involved in government relations, journalism and politics. It is a resource for students, researchers and concerned citizens. The integrated methods used provide unique and valuable insights into decisions that impact families and communities. Data visualizations turn complex data into easily digestible information. In addition, VPAP operates a news aggregation service. VaNews provides a convenient way to find articles from across the Commonwealth about government and politics that meet high standards for original news reporting.
VPAP's unique, nonpartisan approach is supported by partisans and independents alike; it is valuable to all voters. The Board composition is half Republican and half Democrat, each committed to working together on behalf of Virginia’s citizenry. VPAP’s work has won awards from numerous organizations, including the Virginia Coalition for Open Government, the Wilder School of Public Policy at VCU and the Society of Professional Journalists.
