The Office Deputy performs skilled work to protect the lives and property of the citizens of Williams County. This position performs various law enforcement duties related to the civil process, such as processing civil legal documents, serving warrants, and assisting in community policing activities.


The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities performed by incumbents in this position.   • Creates and maintains criminal warrant files; validates information according to policy and procedure
  • Serves warrants within the Sheriff’s Office and correctional setting
  • Receives walk-in criminal complaints
  • Reviews local and state warrants for the validity of information and verifies arrest warrants and criminal reports; records, files, and distributes related paperwork
  • Processes, as assigned, criminal warrants according to defined policy and procedures; creates files and enters data into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and Central Warrants Information System; removes canceled warrants as directed
  • Processes civil legal documents, as assigned; collects bond fees, compiles data, and generates reports
  • Prepares detailed reports and completes technical paperwork
  • Serves civil process documents, warrants, legal notices, and subpoenas
  • Conducts community policing activities to help prevent crime, reduce fear of crime, and improve community relations; liaises with business owners and other community members to hear concerns and offer suggestions to improve safety and security
  • Presents educational and informational programs through community and school awareness projects; educates residents on law enforcement activities, programs, and provides referral resources
  • Assists other Sheriff’s Office staff, county departments, and federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies as needed
  • Maintains the integrity, professionalism, and ethical standards of the Sheriff’s Office by assuring that all rules and regulations are followed

Maintains confidentiality of non-public records and makes available all data and information deemed a public record by the North Dakota Century Code.TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:Education, Experience and License/Certifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent AND one (1) year of satisfactory work experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience

  • Must pass and maintain license requirements set by the North Dakota Peace Officer Standards and Training Board

  • Must possess a valid North Dakota Driver’s License or equivalent

  • Must pass a background check and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening

  • Technical certifications in CPR, First Aid, and specialized equipment are required


Special Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in both internal and external environments with exposure to inclement weather and varying temperatures; may be subject to physical harm such as dangerous vehicles, gunshots, and physical attacks; may be exposed to hazardous chemicals, drugs, and infectious diseases

  • Must maintain a level of physical fitness to meet Department standards; required to restrain persons physically

  • Must be able to work in uniform during weekdays, weekends, and holidays on any assigned shift

Compensation: Starting Salary ranges from $25.48 - $33.65/hour Depending on Qualifications, experience and training.
