Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant Job Description for Outpatient Addiction Medicine

Addiction Medicine Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants
Addiction Medicine Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants are generalists who work in addiction medicine outpatient treatment clinics. They provide general and preventative care, addiction medicine care, conduct check-ups, treat illnesses, order lab tests, and prescribe medication for patients with the disease of addiction.

A Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant will help with all aspects of patient care, including diagnosis, treatments, and consultations. They may work in both inpatient and outpatient situations and can perform independently or as part of a treatment team. Generally, nurse practitioners perform the important task of educating patients about preventative care and prescribed treatments. They may also conduct physicals, order tests, and serve as a patient's primary healthcare provider.

Duties and Responsibilities
Primary duties and responsibilities would be to diagnose and treat patients with the disease of addiction, utilizing evidence-based medicine in accordance with all state and federal rules and guidelines. Successful outcomes in Addiction Medicine are achieved by treating the patient with a holistic approach. In addition to substance use disorders, the nurse practitioner must address the patient’s medical comorbidities and psychiatric co-occurring disorders.

Role
The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant is a licensed independent practitioner who is responsible for managing health problems and coordinating health care for the addiction medicine patient in accordance with State and Federal rules and regulations and the nursing standards of care (assessment of health status, diagnosis, development of the plan of care and treatment, implementation of the treatment plan, and evaluation of patient status).

Essential responsibilities
1. Functions independently to perform a history and physical for patients with the disease of addiction.
2. Orders and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic tests relative to the patient’s specific needs.
3. Prescribes appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities.
4. Implements interventions to support the patient to regain or maintain physiologic stability.
5. Monitors the effectiveness of interventions.
6. Facilitates the patient’s transition within and between health care settings, e.g. admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.
7. Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members by making appropriate referrals and interventions.
8. Facilitates staff, patient, and family decision making by providing educational tools.
9. Patient management is conducted in collaboration with other health care team members.

Minimum Qualifications of Nurse Practitioner
1. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
2. Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program
3. Current Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Licensure in the state of Alabama
4. Alabama DEA License
4. Current provider card in Basic Life Support (BLS)
5. Strong computer skills, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Minimum Qualifications of Physician Assistant
1. Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Program
2. Current Physician Assistant Licensure in the state of Alabama
3. Alabama DEA License
4. Current provider card in Basic Life Support (BLS)
5. Strong computer skills, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Experience
Prior Addiction Medicine experience is preferred, but not necessary.
Practitioner will receive on the job training per a Board-Certified Addiction Medicine Specialist Physician.
