In this Medical Lab Technician position, located in our Edmonds Regional Medical Center, you will provide information for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease by conducting medical laboratory tests, procedures, experiments, and analyses.

  • Determine normal and abnormal components of body fluids by conducting chemical and/or microscopic analyses of blood, urine, spinal fluids, and other specimens.
  • Reports on technological findings by collecting, analyzing, summarizing information and communicating notifiable results.
  • Ensures operation of analyzers and other laboratory equipment by calibrating; completing preventive maintenance requirements, following manufacturer's instructions,
  • Troubleshooting, calling for service support, maintaining operational inventories, evaluating new equipment and techniques.
  • Provides medical technology information and support by responding to questions and requests from other healthcare providers and leadership.
  • Conserves laboratory resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge. This may be accomplished by: Attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, participating in professional societies and participation in competency assessment.
  • Maintains inter- and intradepartmental work flow by fostering a spirit of cooperation. Contributes to team effort by accomplishing additional related tasks as needed.
  • Maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations. Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control and hazardous waste policies and protocols, and following identification procedures.
  • Maintains laboratory supplies inventory by checking stock to ensure “always ready status”, including across shift changes.
  • May perform phlebotomy dependent on location

This position requires a background in one or more of the following laboratory disciplines: chemistry, hematology, microbiology, phlebotomy, blood bank, and biological sciences and an understanding of quality control concepts and general laboratory techniques. The ability to attend to detail, strong organizational skills, the ability to work under stressful working conditions, understanding of laboratory safety issues, excellent communication skills, and accurate documentation. Also the position requires an understanding of healthcare regulations, good interpersonal, teamwork, problem solving skills, data entry and computer operation skills, and critical judgment skills.

An Associate’s degree in Applied Arts and Sciences is required. A newly graduated Medical Laboratory Technician may be hired with the requirement that if they do not pass an accredited Registry Exam for Medical Laboratory Technician within 6 months of hire, their employment will end.

A Registration with the American Society of Clinical Pathologist - MLT (ASCP) or equivalent is required for this position. After a sufficient orientation period, each Medical Laboratory Technologist must be able to competently perform all testing procedures and processes as outlined in the Procedure Manual(s) in the laboratory section(s) in which they will be performing testing.

A valid MA-Phlebotomy certificate with the Washington State Department of Health-Quality Assurance Office is required for this position. After a sufficient orientation period, each Medical Laboratory Technologist must be able to competently perform all specimen collection and processing procedures as outlined in the Specimen Collection and Processing Procedure Manual(s).

Experience preferred, but not required.
