Legislative Assistant, Policy, and Government Affairs

VVA, is a national non-profit veteran's service organization, is seeking a Legislative Assistant for Policy and Government Affairs. The candidate will be a well-organized, dedicated professional with two years of administrative, communications and computer experience.
The duties and responsibilities of the Legislative Assistant are:
Serves as the primary point of contact for the Legislative Action network; produces and distributes online mailings, Action Alerts, and other communications.
Coordinate responses to and tracks requests from congressional Committees, Members of
Congress, and congressional staff regarding current law, legislative proposals, regulatory actions, and VVA member inquiries.
Drafts general correspondence, including responses to the Congress, Department of Veterans Affairs, and other agencies.
Monitors legislation and Congressional schedules utilizing web-based programs.
Monitors hearings and meetings, when assigned by the Director, PGA.
Ensures communication of all relevant information to appropriate VVA leadership and staff, under the direction of the Deputy Director, PGA.
Serves as functional computer file manager for PGA, including establishing and maintaining a functional filing system.
Opens, screens, and prioritizes all mail and other correspondence addressed to PGA.
Performs clerical duties such as photocopying, preparing outgoing mail, sending overnight and UPS ground packages, and transmitting correspondence.
Assures availability of necessary office supplies for PGA.
Maintains a calendar of activities for PGA Works cooperatively with others in VVA.
Maintains an orderly work environment.
Maintains attention to detail in all work performed.
Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge and understanding of Congressional affairs and activities, public-policy to include the legislative process at the federal, state and local level.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
The applicant must be proficient with Microsoft excel, word, and outlook.
the applicant must reside in the Continental United States.
Experience: 2 years of administrative experience in a subject area relevant to local government policy-analysis or congressional affairs, including at least 6 months to a year two-years of professional experience in the legislative or policy field.
Education: Associate Degree
Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
