Summary
The Department Head, Radiology and Nuclear Medicine oversees and
supervises a department with approximately 88 employees, including
radiologists, technologists, and support staff which produce an
annual volume of over 80,000 radiology studies.

Responsibilities
The department consists of seven sections representing each of seven
modalities: Radiography, Fluoroscopy, Ultrasound, Magnetic Resonance
Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT), Mammography, Nuclear
Medicine. Department Head responsibilities include evaluation and
selection of imaging equipment, recruitment, hiring and supervision
of staff, and optimization of work flow in each modality at the main
hospital and at multiple outpatient clinics at the FHCC and at the
Great Lakes Navy Base. The Department Head also supervises
educational activities in the department, including medical students
from Chicago Medical School, medicine residents from the FHCC, and
Radiologic Technology students from the College of Lake County.
Responsibilities also include supervision of quality assurance and
peer review for radiologists and technologists and oversight of
quality improvement efforts and the radiation and MRI safety
programs.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements
by the closing date of this announcement, 12/31/2019.
Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed
when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in
accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting
from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools
approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in
which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or
surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United
States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by
the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core
specialty training program leading to eligibility for board
certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements outlined below.
Preferred Experience:
  • Board certified radiologist, fellowship trained in
cross-sectional imaging preferred.
  • Training in mammography preferred.

II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found
in the local Human Resources Office.
Physical Requirements: Physical and mental status of individuals
should enable them to perform all their duties under normal and
emergent conditions. The applicant must have the ability to perform
efficiently and without hazard to self or others will encompass
consideration of physical, mental, and emotional ability as related
to realistic requirements for the duties and responsibilities to be
assumed. The work requires exertions such as walking, standing,
stooping, bending, and carrying light items in the direct care of
patients.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of
eight (8) hours per biweekly pay period.
