Vaupell designs, engineers, and produces custom, high performance engineered plastic and composite components and assemblies for demanding applications. Position purpose/core responsibilities
The Buyer facilitates the procurement of materials and related services required by the company to maintain Vaupell’s position of a world class plastic products supplier. This position will participate in the materials procurement function of the company and will have ownership of material flow, delivery, schedule adjustments, supplier communications, and continuous improvement of supply chain processes. This will include responsibility for meeting all supply chain metrics, managing inventory levels, on-time shipments, and cost control. The Buyer will collaborate closely with Sales and Business Operations within the assigned commodities to support the company's overall growth plan.

Essential Functions:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Negotiate delivery terms, dates, and conditions for the procurement of required materials and services from approved suppliers

  • Establish strategies to improve supply chain, solve shortage issues and strengthen supplier relationships

  • Obtain materials, components and equipment, as required by the production schedule

  • Plan, schedule, monitor the movement of materials through the supply chain

  • Expedite orders as necessary. Identify actual and potential delivery problems and take proactive steps to inform appropriate personnel

  • Monitor inventory dollar levels and turns to achieve Corporate inventory goals

  • Establish and maintain relations with suppliers and appropriate representatives and direct and provide supplier technical and operating expertise as required to internal customer

  • Maintain an awareness of materials and procurement concepts

  • Verify data accuracy (parts numbers, BOMs, Part Costs) in MRP; report problems to appropriate parties

  • Understand and apply MRP reports in ordering parts used in production to ensure appropriate delivery dates

  • Identify problem areas and offer possible solutions

  • Complete special assignments for the Purchasing department as directed by the Purchasing Manager

  • Track progress of parts to ensure time schedules and delivery to Vaupell

  • Implement improvement processes to reduce inventory and non-value added work

  • Perform supplier audits, supplier selection and ongoing rating

  • Continually assess market conditions which may affect procurement and recommend procurement and materials management strategy changes

  • Monitors, analyzes, and reports material variances to standard cost. Interfaces with Accounting, Manufacturing Engineering, and Production to establish standard costs.

  • Responsible for optimizing material costs through vendor analysis, quality, schedule, cost evaluation, etc. Applies cost effective measures as related to support standard cost and make/buy decisions

    Qualification Guidelines

    Candidates must be either US Citizens or US Persons to ensure Vaupell’s compliance with ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) and EAR (Export Administration Regulations)


  • 2 years purchasing experience required; purchasing experience in a manufacturing environment preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree from 4-year college in purchasing, business or related area, or equivalent experience preferred

  • CPM or CPIM and/or APICS is preferred

  • Requires a fundamental knowledge of MRP systems

  • Supplier communication capabilities with above average oral and written skills

  • Above average working knowledge with Microsoft Suite products, especially Excel

    Ability to:

  • Read, analyze and interpret general business documents, technical procedures, drawings, government regulations

  • Manage and manipulate system data and parameters to ensure company stocking levels and customer service levels

  • Work independently, establish priorities and make decisions

  • Work within a team as well as cross-functionally within the organization

  • Interact effectively with people from various backgrounds

    Physical Standards:
    This position requires accessing all areas in the plant necessary to monitor the progress of orders. It also requires occasional reaching, stooping and lifting of office files, reports or records, typically weighing 5 pounds or less.
