Job Description

Varsity Tutors is hiring a Principal Technical Program Manager to transform our engineering organization and help drive the growth of our educational products and programs. The right candidate will possess excellent leadership skills, strong technical expertise and hands-on project management skills. They will have a proven track record of leading large and complex projects with cross-functional teams; having shared goals while managing without direct authority. You should thrive in a startup and an entrepreneurial environment and shouldn't be afraid of ambiguity or multiple competing priorities.

As a Principal Technical Program Manager, you will anticipate bottlenecks, own escalation management, anticipate, and make trade-offs, while balancing the business needs versus technical constraints. The right candidate will be adept at writing technical specifications and owning program schedules from idea to launch. You will work effectively across the entire technical team and across partner teams including product, data science and UX; managing deliverables for critical milestones. Maturity, high judgment, ability to influence and deal with ambiguity, analytical talent, and leadership are essential to success in this role. Qualifications

  • Experience managing projects across cross functional teams and partner teams, building sustainable processes and coordinating to deliver on our roadmap.
  • 7+ years of relevant engineering experience and 5+ years of technical program management experience
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Computer Science, Operations Management, or similar field.
  • Proven experience setting organization level goals, formulating program backlogs, and driving delivery across engineering and partner teams.
  • Proven track record of discovering the true requirements, ability to recommend alternative technical and business approaches, and lead engineering efforts to meet timelines with solutions.
  • Understand and be able to teach an agile software development process and experience shipping high quality software fast.
  • Strong business and technical vision.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, and high comfort to present to C-suite executives.
  • Self starter who can roll up their sleeves and self serve (including on data analysis).

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate and coordinate project work with multiple business, operations, and technical teams to define and deliver high quality products and programs.
  • Plan and manage multiple parallel projects.
  • Anticipate bottlenecks, provide escalation management, and balance the business needs versus technical constraints.
  • Maximize resources and drive efficiency in a constrained environment
  • Identify, assess, track and mitigate issues and risks at multiple levels.
  • Drive effective teamwork, communication, collaboration and commitment across multiple teams with competing priorities.
  • Communicate project issues and status in a concise, accurate, and professional manner
  • Remain flexible to changing priorities and exhibit comfort with ambiguity
  • Develop detailed technical project plans and execute on the plan until completion.
  • Coordinate with the engineering team to align cross-tech team sprint schedules & release plans.
  • Document and drive efficient processes, automating as much as possible.
