Our Deli department features scratch baked goods, dishes and drinks using many organic and local ingredients. Our Meat department features high quality, local meat and seafood with a full-service and self-service case. Department Operations, Purchasing and Merchandising

  • Work with, and direct staff as necessary, ensuring all department operations are executed according to established procedures. Regularly review to ensure efficiencies are gained where applicable.
  • Conduct regular price comparisons with identified competitors.
  • With Kitchen Supervisor, research, develop and competitively price new recipes. Maintain cost and waste records.
  • Work with Store Manager to achieve sales and margin goals for the departments by setting prices and controlling expenses appropriately, reviewing departmental financial reports and taking corrective action as needed. 
  • Create an inspired and inclusive flavor profile for VNF made products that highlights seasonality, local products, and cultural inclusivity
  • Ensure VNF signage and branding standards (signage, accurate shelf tags, PLU's, prices) are maintained 
  • Ensure accurate PLU's, new products, and price changes are entered promptly into system.
  • Work with Marketing Brand Manager to plan promotions (coupons, flyers, E-Blast, newsletter)
  • Work with vendors to secure promotional offerings; regularly evaluate suppliers and investigate new suppliers
  • Plan and execute physical product resets, monthly promotional specials, merchandising and store displays. Merchandise attractive displays using color and texture to enhance.
  • Oversee ordering and ensure:  
    • Employees purchase within product guidelines and department budget. (priority for local, organic etc.)
    • Products are selected with favorable prices, terms, quality, and delivery & margin goals are met
    • Regular evaluation of vendors and source new suppliers of all products
    • Timely, adequate supply of promoted products and ensure negotiated prices are reflected in promotions
    • Timely orders, in stock levels are maintained for regular supply and sales
    • All deliveries are received, according to the established procedures 
    • Orders not received by Receiving Clerk are entered, according to the established procedures
    • Close dated merchandise is put on sale for quick sale
    • Slow sellers are determined and stock is regularly rotated. 
    • Items unable to sell are returned or otherwise properly disposed of following established procedures
    • Accurate shrink records are kept
    • Inventory participation
    • Special orders are placed and pulled for customers. Follow all established procedures for returns and credit from suppliers.
  • Develop whole meal solutions in both the cooked and ready to eat and raw forms 
  • Schedule product training for all staff to increase knowledge

Leadership, Communication and Personnel

  • Ensure co-op procedures and policies are followed in the hiring, evaluating, and managing of performance of all employees. 
  • Participate in leadership team meetings. Regularly meet with staff and hold department and quarterly meetings according to VNF protocol. 
  • Assist with special events, attend trade shows and/or manufacturer tours at the request or discretion of the Store Manager
  • Provide leadership and direction, setting performance objectives, coaching, and developing skills to ensure that they achieve their goals, address under performance quickly and decisively. Ensure timely performance evaluations. 
  • Help set priorities for supervisors and shifts leads to ensure proper staffing, productive workflow, and standardized procedures for departments. Find coverage for shifts vacated due to absence/illness. Cover shift if no replacement is found.
  • Ensure quarterly competitive shops are completed. Share data with Store Manager.
  • Ensure orientation and training of new employees is consistent to ensure employee success. Treat staff with consistency, fairness, and respect. 
  • Submit requests to hire to Store Manager and ensure equitable, competitive compensation.
  • Ensure open channels for employee input and recognition.
  • Promote a team based environment where personal and professional growth is encouraged and cultivated. 
  • Champion VNF's Mission internally and in our community. Lead by example to inspire employee engagement and commitment to our Mission, Vision, Values and Culture.

Business Leadership, Communication and Personnel

Co-op Operations, Safety and Compliance

  • Alert Management of potential shoplifters, disorderly customers, or other emergencies
  • Keep department areas - shelves, counters, aisles, backstock -- in clean, orderly condition.
  • Remove trash promptly, clean up spills, sweep floor as needed.
  • Participate as the store MOD on a closing shift weekly.
  • Keep department equipment in working order and advise Store Manager of equipment problems.
  • Lead staff meetings and other assigned training requirements.
  • Participate in inventory counts.
  • Perform any other duty as assigned by Store Manager and CEO.
  • Obtain and maintain ServeSafe certification. 

Requirements

Mandatory Qualifications:

  • Regular, predictable attendance
  • Previous customer service experience with English proficiency
  • Previous experience in a Deli and/or restaurant environment 
  • Previous leadership experience inc.: hiring, training, performanc management/discipline
  • High level understanding how to read/understand financial statements relating to margins/pricing
  • High level understanding of: MN Dept of Health regulations and Organic vs. local vs. conventional 
  • Demonstrated objectivity, neutrality, and calmness under pressure and timely follow-through to commitments
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Office, and POS systems
  • Excellent time management, organizational and communication (oral, aural, & written) skills with open availability
  • Detail oriented and able to multi-task and remain flexible to the changing needs of the business

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous retail purchasing/merchandising experience (3+ years progressive)
  • Leadership experience
  • Familiarity with natural foods, grocery industry or cooperatives

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to lift/push/pull/carry up to 30 pounds frequently; 30-50+ pounds occasionally
  • Manual dexterity with ability to reach, grasp and perform repetitive motions with hands, wrists, and fingers for extended periods of time
  • Close-to-general range visual acuity to evaluate and interact in working environment and focus on and/or read data and words on a computer monitor for extended periods of time
  • Ability to sit, stand and walk for extended periods of time
  • Regular exposure to working in refrigerated/frozen and hot/humid environments
  • Ability to climb ladders, kneel, crouch, and bend occasionally required
  • Ability to be exposed to, work with, and directly handle dietary allergies including, but not limited to: gluten, wheat and flours; dairy and soy; meats and shellfish; peanuts and tree nuts
  • Ability to work safely with cooking equipment and sanitation supplies
