Job Description

Job Summary

The Associate Medical Director of Inpatient Psychiatry oversees the psychiatric care for individuals admitted to involuntary psychiatric or withdrawal management services. The position provides direct psychiatric care for patients admitted to Recovery Place Kent (RPK), provides clinical supervision to Inpatient Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners, participates in the ITA (Involuntary Treatment Act) legal process as needed, provides administrative leadership (in collaboration with the RPK Director & VP of Inpatient Services) towards the administrative goals and objectives of Valley Cities, and works with other RPK leadership on Continuous Quality Improvement initiatives, implementation of best practices, and ensuring a culture of collaboration, trust, equity, and celebration of diversity.

Essential Job Functions (This is not the job in its entirety):

  • Provide initial psychiatric evaluations to clients admitted to involuntary psychiatric and secure withdrawal management services.
  • Lead a multidisciplinary care team in creation of a treatment plan.
  • Provide and document ongoing psychiatric assessments throughout episodes of inpatient treatment.
  • Provide medical/ pharmacologic management of clients’ psychiatric conditions and substance withdrawal, as indicated and appropriate.
  • Provide appropriate assessment, orders and documentation of any required emergency treatment, seclusion, or restraints.
  • Provide medical/clinical support to the nursing team as requested.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests as appropriate.
  • Utilize and oversee medication assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorders, including naltrexone and buprenorphine when appropriate.

Management/Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Provides support to designing the agency’s continuum of care to ensure clients access appropriate levels of care to promote health outcomes
  • Collaborations with King County Crisis and Commitment Services and the Involuntary Treatment Act Court to support the legal and treatment process
  • Collaboration with both Nursing and Medical Teams to engage in a multidisciplinary team approach
  • Takes responsibility for the general leadership and management of the facility in order to accomplish and support VCCC’s missions, goals and objectives
  • Institutes and maintains an organizational vision and environment that emphasizes teamwork, trust, professionalism, efficiency, and customer service
  • Engages with Managed Care Organizations and the Behavioral Health Administrative Services Organization around appropriate Utilization Management to ensure appropriate levels of care are available to clients
  • Tracks data and provides information to manage contracts for reimbursement, service provision, employees, and leased spaces within the clinic site’s area

Minimum Qualifications

  • M.D. or D.O.
  • Graduation from an accredited school or program
  • Licensed to practice under state WAC and RCW
  • ABPN Board certified or board-eligible
  • Familiarity with best practices in substance use disorder treatment including withdrawal management, Medication Assisted Treatment for OUD and harm reduction
  • Understanding of Washington State Involuntary Treatment Act procedures
  • Pass required background checks.


  • Ability to work independently including making acute treatment and referral decisions
  • Ability to function as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Competence with electronic health record documentation
  • Possession of a DEA “X” waiver to prescribe buprenorphine preferred – must obtain within 3 months of hire.
