Job Description: JOB SUMMARY: The Chief Operating Officer (COO) will oversee the design, enhancement, implementation, reporting and oversight of La Montanita Co-op’s retail store operations, outside sales and distribution center. Reporting to the General Manger and working as a key member of the Co-op’s Leadership Team, the COO will play a critical role in helping to shape and guide the future growth and development of the Co-op. The COO will develop, refine and implement Operations strategy ensuring the Co-op delivers and achieves the LMC Ends and Global Ends that are established and determined by the Board of Directors. The COO will be responsible for leading the day-to-day operations in accordance with the strategic plan and operating and capital budgets as well as for the management and overall quality and efficiency the stores and distribution center. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: NOTE: La Montanita Co-op unilaterally may change the requirements of this job description at any time. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty Oversees the implementation of the day-to-day operations of LMC. Ensures that all divisions that report to the COO maintain a high level of expertise, operating effectively and efficiently in achieving desired outcomes and performance standards are met. Develops, in collaboration with the CEO and the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), an annual operating plan that supports the Co-op’s long-term operations strategy. Aassists the CEO and the CFO in developing and overseeing the long-term business strategies.Provides leadership to develop and foster a positive work environment ensuring administration of department programs, projects and goals. Establishes clear expectations for direct reports with means to hold each other accountable to ensure expectations are met and offers support to meet expectations. Provides real-time feedback regarding performance of direct reports. Creates training and development opportunities that enhance employees’ abilities and builds upon their skills, knowledge and abilities. Supervises work performance and conduct of direct reports and upholds performance management practices and staff recognition as needed and in accordance with LMC policies, procedures, labor and legal guidelines. Models behaviors that support the values of LMC through supportive and participatory leadership qualities, promoting cooperative team building and motivating staff to achieve goals. Maintains a positive and ethical work climate that is conducive to attracting, retaining and motivating a diverse group of top-quality employees at all levels. Responsible for assisting in the development and management of the annual budget; assists in all phases of the budget process. Works with department heads for departmental budget planning and presentation to the Board. Works with other entities acting as financial advisors to LMC. Reviews financial reports and ensures direct reports are meeting obligations in a timely manner. Monitors inventory management programs and practices.Assist the CEO in overseeing the Co-op’s achievement and maintenance of a satisfactory competitive position within its industry. Keeps the CEO fully informed in a timely and candid manner of the conduct of the day-today operations of the Co-op towards the achievement of its established goals and of all material deviations from the goals or objectives and policies established by the Board. Briefs the CEO on operational matters for review in advance of meetings of the Board.Meeting attendance: Represents LMC at local, regional and national organizations meetings as appropriate.Responsibility for confidential matters: Routinely handles information related to personnel records, salaries and labor negotiations. Works in a confidential manner and maintains confidentiality as appropriate.Supports LMC’s security and safety protocols and establish strong control measures. Establishes and monitors programs for maintenance of facilities and assets are well maintained. Ensures the development of health and safety practices for the Co-op and oversees compliance with those practices and concerns are promptly addressed. Responds to and ensures effective management of security, safety and loss prevention. Ensures all direct reports learn and monitor for use of safe practices and address safety and security concerns promptly.Coordinate the sustainability strategies of the Corporation. Assess and manage the principal risks of the Corporation's business within operations (proposals, projects and staffing). Ensures that there is an effective succession plan in place for the COO position and other key positons of the Co-op reporting to the COO. Assists the CEO in establishing an appropriate organizational structure.Other responsibilities, projects and tasks and functions related to the office of the COO or as appointed by the General Manager and/or deemed necessary for the operations of LMC. Abides by all co-op policies and procedures as specified in the Employment Manual or by expectations established. Supports the cooperative values, principles and upholds the Management General Responsibilities daily. Fosters a corporate culture that promotes ethical practices, customer focus and service and encourages individual integrity; REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (includes education, skills and experience): The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.Bachelor's Degree in Business Management, Agricultural Sciences, related field and/or commensurate experience with a minimum of 8 years of experience running and sustaining an economically viable retail organization.Knowledge of New Mexico and federal laws, rules and regulations governing cooperative retail establishments, including liability, insurance, commerce, general taxation and labor.Experience managing financial statements, budgets and projections.Previous experience creating and developing effective procedural and operational standards.Excellent planning, organizational and time management skills.Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills and able to communicate with individuals of diverse background.Effectively present information in one-to-one and small group situations to customers and other employees.Proficient computer skills to include, Word, Power Point, Excel, email, website software with an aptitude to learning new programs.Strong leadership and management skillsStrong attention to detail and ability to follow complex written and verbal instructions.Proven ability to set and achieve department and organizational goals.Desire and ability to determine, foster and develop the best qualities and contributions of department personnel. Preferred Qualifications:Experience in marketing and training.Prior experience working in a co-op environment.
