Univ Ombuds Job ID 236488 Location Central Administration Full/Part Time Full-Time Favorite Job Regular/Temporary Regular Opening Full Time 40 hours Grade 056 Provost's Office Responsibilities GENERAL PURPOSE: This newly created position of University Ombuds will be the lead staff person responsible for the Office of the University Ombuds which will include having the lead responsibility for directing the University's new Ombuds Affiliates Program and meeting the training needs of its assigned members. The University Ombuds will adhere to the International Ombudsman Association (IOA) Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice. The University Ombuds will act as a neutral, independent, informal, and confidential resource for the University of Rochester faculty, staff and students who are seeking assistance to resolve questions and concerns affecting their relations with peers or the institution.

The ombuds is not an advocate for either visitors to the office or for the university, but is rather a designated neutral who remains unaligned and impartial; with respect to any given instance or concern, the ombuds takes into consideration the points of view and legitimate needs and interests of all parties to a conflict or dispute. The ombuds does not participate in formal dispute resolution processes, conduct formal investigations or adjudicate complaints, and has no power to make, change, or set aside administrative decisions. RESPONSIBILITIES: + The roles and functions of the University Ombuds may include, but are not limited to, assisting faculty staff and students who have questions, concerns, and complaints about a particular situation, by engaging in informal information gathering to better understand an issue from all perspective.

With client's permission, facilitating communication and dialogue while providing informal mediation between conflicted parties. + Helping individuals to weigh the pros and cons of alternative courses of action; + Providing information and explanation about university policies and procedures. + Provide on-going training and supervision of the individual's serving in the Ombuds Affiliate Networks + Providing assessments and recommendations to appropriate University officials on areas of process and climate improvement + Promoting a safe, respectful, ethical, and productive campus community in line with the University's values and policies QUALIFICATIONS: + Master's., Ph.D., JD or advanced certificate in mediation, conflict or dispute resolution, organizational psychology, higher education, counseling, or related fields required.

+ Five years or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred + High degree of credibility and integrity. Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgement and prudence in dealing with sensitive confidential matters. Remain nonjudgmental.

Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills. Excellent problem-solving skills including being able to investigate, gather, analyze, and interpret information. Culturally competent and skilled in working with faculty and staff from a wide variety of backgrounds and orientations.
