Continuing Education for the Bar (CEB) is seeking a Chief Financial Officer. CEB (Continuing Education of the Bar) is nonprofit program of the University of California dedicated to the delivery of superior, California-specific legal resources and solutions to the state's attorneys. Founded in 1947 to help WWII veterans returning home resume the practice of law, CEB, now located in Oakland, supports the University of California's education and public service mission by providing the finest research, writing, and presentation by the best and brightest lawyers in the state. Under the general oversight of the CEB Executive Director, this position provides strategic managerial, operational, and leadership support for $26M organization. This includes responsibility for directing and controlling CEB's budget, business model optimization, finance administration, and financial resources in accordance with CEB's strategic goals. Additionally, this position has oversight of contracts with vendors, purchasing, travel reimbursement, purchasing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, transfer of funds, and other financial transactions. Position manages a team of 7. This position will also have a dotted line reporting relationship with the Associate Dean/COO of UCLA Extension and Continuing Education. Job Duties
Duties Function (%)
Oversee the timely and accurate preparation and approval of all financial reporting materials for internal management use and external reporting; prepare and communicate monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements
Oversee the development and evaluation of short and long-term financial projections, analysis, assignment of resource allocations and reporting
Manage cash flow and forecasting; direct all financial, project-based and departmental accounting
Oversee the coordination of records between UCLA General Ledger and CEB General Ledger
In full compliance with University policies and guidelines, oversee all cash-handling activities
Lead and manage forecasting and annual budgeting, and the implementation of budgets; monitor progress and present metrics both internally and externally
Develop financial reports for regular CEB Advisory Board/Finance Committee meetings, and manage the relationship with the Board's Finance Committee
Ensure effective financial controls are in place and that finance/accounting staff maintain financial record systems in accordance with University guidelines and requirements as well as Generally Accepted Accounting Principles; monitor use of all funds
Coordinate all audit activities
Oversee financial management related to all CEB assets including inventory management and royalty accounting
Develop and track performance measures that support the CEB's strategic goals and direction, including KPIs for sales, IT, and product related initiatives; measure financial performance of transformation initiatives
Manage CEB's financial relationships with UCLA campus stakeholders, including budget and audit requirements; participate in meetings as required; work regularly with UNEX staff
Develop and manage direct staff to ensure strong performance; ensure effective performance management and team development of all finance and accounting staff to support CEB transformation and future needs
ACCOUNTING, FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT, ANALYSIS & BUDGETING
Partner with the Executive Director on financial, operational and strategic issues; provide advice and recommendations based on financial analysis and projections
Participate in the ongoing strategic planning process as an integral member of the executive leadership team guiding and sustaining the overall business transformation
Establish and maintain strong relationships with the executive leadership team so as to identify their needs and seek a full range of business solutions
Provide recommendations to strategically enhance financial performance and business opportunities
Oversee the long-term budgetary planning and cost-management in alignment with CEB's long-term goals and mission
Engage the CEB Advisory Board and Finance Committee around issues, changes and trends in CEB's business
Oversee and develop platform partnerships
Participate in work groups convened as needed
Oversee the Procurement function to ensure compliance within UCLA guidelines; work with UCLA Procurement as needed
Oversee the management of all leases, contracts and other financial commitments
Develop and manage direct staff to ensure strong performance; ensure effective performance management and team development of all staff to support CEB transformation and future needs
Job Req Req/
Master's degree in accounting, finance, business management, or closely related skills and experience equivalent to a degree
Five to ten years' experience in financial analysis, budget management, budget planning, and financial modeling.
Three to five years accounting experience in a business environment including skills sufficient to debit, credit, prepare journal entries, and reconcile expenses.
Working knowledge of the principles of financial accountability.
Analytical skills to recognize relationships between data on reports, existing practices, programs, and situations to define problems and formulate logical alternatives.
Ability to project and monitor expenditures based on historical patterns and budget trends.
Working knowledge of UCLA financial policies, procedures, and processes.
Ability to design and utilize concise and understandable budget reports.
Demonstrated executive management experience as an effective leader and team builder.
Strong tactical, strategic thinking, and problem solving skills necessary to achieve business objectives.
Expert Excel skills, especially with analytics. Expert skills with accounting software and systems. Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and SharePoint. Ability to quickly learn custom UCLA databases, systems, and web-based software.
Strong verbal and written communication skills including excellent interpersonal skills necessary for leadership, team building, and multi-level communication.
